I have read about G11 before but have never handled it or even seen any until this project. I love the color of it in this olive green and its semi transparent, well, at least this stuff I have here provided by Evan is. I think it is something that will really enhance the look of the folder personally.

This one just got underway. All that is up right now is step 1 where I take the folder apart. Step 2 next and then on to the finish.

Stay tuned.

Step 2 up and moving on.

Thanks for looking.

Step 3 up. Now we're gettin' somewhere. Get to milling the lock spring out here and then will have to redrill both the pivot hole in the blade and the one in the lockbar for a test fire of the lock up to see how I did.

STR

Step 4 and 5 up now. Hit a stopping point for the day here.

Milled out the spacer to proper thickness to hold the spring, and cut all the screws to length after drilling all the holes in the G11 scales. Then I got it together and everything checks out as A Ok including the lock up so on to the next steps towards finish tomorrow with a custom low rider pocket clip and when I anodize the spacer to as close as I can get it to the G11. At that point some digital pics will be in order when done.

Then after its finished I will pack it up and contact Tom Krein to let him know that its on the way to him for his masterful regrind of the blade as per the request of the customer.

Wow! I absolutely love that color of green. Green is actually my favorite color. That is a beautiful shade of green.

Is that green G11 something that you can get your hands on Steve? I may have to send a Spydie your way to get new scales in that exact color. ;)

Ok digital picture time.

Looks like I have a pocket clip to make next. That will take some time since I will be trying to do one once again designed by the owner of the knife.

The folder weighed in at 1.6 oz before getting started. It weighs in now at 1.9 oz. Of course I have the pocket clip and two screws to add yet too though. I am guessing it will be around 2 ounces when done.

I have tried to show the transluceny of this glass filled material. Glass is about what this stuff is like. It seems to be very very strong stuff. I don't doubt its stronger by a 30% margin than regular G10. Perhaps more so.

I have anodized the spring holder olive green at the customers request. Not sure if you can see that or not here.

Anyway, one more step and its in the mail to Tom, probably Monday unless I see something I want or need to tweak.

Thanks for looking.

I like the color a LOT better now that you have the slabs finished. I was showing my fiance how the raw slabs looked and she said yuk. I told her I had to save up a few hundred bucks to get a rebuild in lignum vitae and she said yuk to spending that money, also :(

Wow that's weird. In the final pictures they scales look tan.

Is the camera or the scanner off or something? Did they get lighter in color?

I really need a new monitor. I can never tell how good or bad a picture is until I sign on using my lap top. I leave this desk top on all the time and it got zapped by lightning a while back. Color and contrast have been off ever since so I can't judge it at the moment.

I suspect its the translucent affect from sunlight directly on the scales. Its still very green in the hand I can tell you that. It is a neat material. My wife really likes it and was quite happy that I have more to work with. It is almost like it glows at times like its some of that glow in the dark night sight material.

It sure smells funky working it though even with the respirator on you can get a slight whiff of it. :D

This one will be on the way to Tom in the morning.

Thanks Kevin.

I didn't realize until pulling up the pic that I posted the wrong one. Rather than delete it I'll just leave it and post this one here.

I wanted to show how I did the clip so it didn't block the lanyard hole.

Even drew up a rough sketch of what he wanted in the clip but I did change it, actually quite a bit. Hope you are cool with that Evan.

STR...it was a meeting of the minds on the clip...the spirit of it for me was the folding over with access holes for the attachment screws...the rest was all your improvement...i'm very happy with how the whole project turned out...

That is one gorgeous knife. STR, how is the "grippiness?" Like G10? Is this stuff new? Other colors available?

And to evan61, a hearty welcome to the forums!

This is not as readily available as G10 but it seems stronger to me. It is a neat material. I like it and plan to use it again. I've only seen it in this one color. Grippyness is about like the G10 when it is worked by sanding or bead blasting. Its not a problem. Feels good and solid in the hand.

Look at McMaster-Carr.com for it or ebay. Most all of it for sale is always this color I think.

Technically this is G-11/FR-5 which is more fire retardant than FR-4 which is G10. From all the specs its a step up in everyway from G10 but apparently not available from as many sources or in as many colors. Seems more expensive too.

If you get it to work with it be very safe. Both it and G10 are dangerous stuff that can cause serious lung problems if you breath the dust from sanding it and working it repeatedly. A respirator with the proper filtration is a must with this stuff. I only work with it when I can open every door in the shop, barn doors included, turn on all the suck fans and air the place out good.
