Hi,

Does anyone have any experience with one of these? http://www.nonstop-mall.com/AlleySupply/products.asp?searchcrit=CAT&catid=0&scgid=0&offset=120 How loud do they run, do you need to wear hearing protection? Just started to practice on making guards and handles with handtools and am thinking I might be able to make room for one of these if it won't disturb the neighbors too much. I'm mainly hoping to increase my precision but it seems like one of these will save a lot of time. Would it be worthwhile to have one of these as my only power tool? Any advice will be appreciated, thanks.

A drill press is the quietest power tool you'll own, except perhaps for a flatiron. You won't disturb the neighbors with that.

A drill press is also one of the most used tools in just about any shop. Just remember when you're cutting ferrous metals to use a decent cutting lubricant, it'll save your drill bits.

i dont think i could live without my drill presses. i have 2, 1 set up for standard drilling operations and one dedicated to drum sanding for scales and such.

Thanks for the help, guys. I did notice that the drum sanding and other attachments would come in handy as well. Trying to file the tang slot out of some shibuichi has proven more difficult than I anticipated, been at it a few days and not a significant amount of progress yet. Will keep you informed, thanks.

You can also mount a buffing wheel and use it in a drill press. A lot of people never think of this application. You can put it if a changable speed down to where it is very controlable. Saves money on equipment. Mike
