With the short belts ,you would be buyying alot of belts that short of belt just won't stand up to much grinding,

Although Nathan is right that the short belts have less life in them, the machine is an excellent first grinder. If you just want to play around and make a few knives to see if you can get the hang of it, then I say buy one. I hooked mine up to a 1 horse motor and the thing does just fine. Here's one I made using it...
