Jet powered Mr2

I seem to recall that Art Arfons got the jet engine for his jet-powered drag racer in an auction at a military base that was being closed.
The government tried to buy it back, saying it wasn't supposed to be sold. Arfons refused....

That was a ways back....The Green Monster or somesuch?

the trick thing in boats now is to take a 20'-25' cat or hydro hull w/a 'V' drive and put a turbine out of a US army OH58 helicopter in it, IIRC the engine is about $50K and ya would spend more than that on a conventional engine at comparative horsepower, and the turbine will last a lot longer than a std 4 stroke engine. boats like that run at high RPM a lot and turbines are made for that. also easier on gas and no high octane stuff needed like ya would in a 502 chevy crate engine with 11 to 1 compression.

saw a guy at the lake last summer w/a 21' liberator 'v' drive with the OH58 engine, was pretty cool and plenty fast (120+ MPH IIRC) and the engine sounded wicked.

gotta get one!!

The Arfons brothers started out testing their government surplus jet engines by chaining them between a couple of trees in their back yard and firing them up, IIRC!! They lived in Akron, OH a couple of hours north of where I grew up.
