There's a 100lb JHM anvil for sale near me. The seller wants $400 for it.

Has anybody used JHM? They seem to be popular with farriers, but I don't see myself shoeing any horses...

Doc, look into a "scott" brand anvil, they have a little more mass where it counts and are fairly cheap.

Hmm, it looks good, and a farrier who demoed making tongs last month used one. Even on a portable 3-leg stand, it seemed very solid.

I can't find any information about them, though, about construction or hardness. Stockhoff's sells them, but gives no info at all.

Well, I bought the thing. :)

It has been used, but the owner was a farrier and all he seems to have used are the cams and horn. They're not beat up, even, just well-broken-in. The table's smooth as can be and the edges are all still sharp enough that I'll need to chamfer 'em down a bit. I don't have any ball bearings, but dropping a hammer on it comes back up with a quickness, and it rings clear enough that even my deaf ass can hear it.

I picked it up last night, then went straight to work and pulled an all-nighter, and it rained. The anvil was covered, but it still got a bit damp, so I figured I'd better get it good and dry when I got home. With red hot steel, of course.

The worst I can say about this JHM is that it moves a whole lot more metal than my 160lb Trenton. Now all I got to do is learn to put the hammer where I want it. :p
