New knife from a MS, with Jigged bone scales.
Why does the handle leave reddish ochre stains on my hands, sheets, towels, shirst, pants...anything it rubs up against?
Did I actually receive colored/stained plastic?

First off, ask the maker. Always first thing you should do if you have a problem.

Secondly, not sure, could be several things. Likeliest culprits in my mind would be a polishing compound that left some residue on handle, or whatever was used to stain the bone(if it was)

Tks etp77.
Was trying to get an answer without involving and names or specifics. Hmmm, Staining?

Can't say without seeing your knife. But some makers(And plan on trying it myself sometime in future) jig bone, then use various stains(leather stain is one favorite mentioned by some) to make it look like elk.

And I don't want you to involve any names. Just saying you should ask the maker himself(or herself). Not here in thread, but by real communication.

should ask the maker himself
Did that, and to the supplier, nominal response. Is why I posted. But tks for you erstute response.
Now get off it and let me find out what is the true story.
tks

rad148,

I have a Case peanut pattern from the 70's. The handles are red smooth bone, they called it 'Smooth Rose' I believe. This knife has slowly shed red color in all the years I've had it.

So did my red bone scales on my Henckels trapper. It was never too annoying and it went away by time (~ one month). It left slight red streaks on my palm and took me some time to figure out the reason.

My thinking was that it should be either water, alcohol or oil soluble so I gently rubbed the scales with paper towel wetted with water, then with ethanol and finally with a bit of oil. I allowed it to dry between each step. In worst case, I thought, they might look 'pocket-worn'. I am still not sure how much it helped but there is no problem now and the scales look beautiful.

Better yet, contact the maker for advise.

Do not panic, a bone scale will always look better IMHO then any plastic anyway.

Tks guys,
HM, will try your solution soonest. Tks all for the information. First of this type scales I have had and havnt seen posts about this from others. As mentioned this is from an MS so figured I just needed info.
Sorry etp77 for being a bit abrupt, but after you came back the second time to contact maker....well...after only 35 or so customs, I kind of knew that already. :) and the rug rats were biting my ankles.

Have you used Rennesance wax or anything on the bone? I used Ren wax on a red/brown bone handle once and some of the dye rubbed off. I let the knife sit for a few days and all was well again.
