Jigged bone in pocket with change and keys

Hi guys, I don't usually post in the traditionals, but I misplaced my peanut I've been carrying for years. The handles were some kind of wood and they held up great in my change pocket. I'm planning on replacing it with a Case tiny trapper or gents knife in jigged bone. How does bone hold up in a change pocket with keys and such. I don't mind normal wear, but I plan on carrying the knife for many years. Thanx.

The bone does fine, but the bolsters are what really take the beating. If you wear jeans, the nut or tiny trapper fit well in the "watch" pocket. I try to:

1. Keep stuff out of the knife pocket
2. Use a knife slip
3. Wrap in a handkerchief

I just don't like the undue wear.

The keys and the change will help "age" the knife. Or you can keep your change and keys in one front pocket and the knife in the other. OH

This is my plan for preventing unneccessary wear. Keys and phone in left front pocket, knife and wallet in the other. The wallet keeps the knife upright as well.

There's nothing better than a pocket worn knife with bone scales, it's like patina on the blade, it's character earned by use. :)

At over a 100+ years old and plenty of pocket time in the 10 or so years I've had it this Union Knifeworks Moose in Jigged Bone doesn't seem any worse for the west from rising in my pocket with keys, change and other knives.

Carry it without fear or concern it'll be fine.

It just depends on what you want. I'm more like Woodrow. To prevent scratches and any chance of loss, I carry all of my traditionals in a Case suede slip. They are very inexpensive and 100% effective.

I carry a jigged bone knife in my pocket every day. That bone is pretty tough. The bolsters on the knife will get beat up long before the bone. I like the look of a "worn" traditional knife. If you're concerned, use the suede slip.

Thanx for the info and suggestions. I'll go ahead and buy the knife. I'd try carrying it in my watch pocket or alternate pockets but those are occupied.

Bone is very tough, have no fear!

The only thing better in my eyes is Stag.

Big Mike

Is that real stag or Stagalon, Schrade's Delrin faux stag? It looks like Stagalon which IIRC was common and used on most of the Uncle Henry knives from the 70s on.

I understand you issue about your keys scratching you new knife. One obvious answer is to put your keys
Into a leather slipcase or pouch. That keeps your keys away from your knife.

Knife and folding money in RF pocket, keys and coins in LF pocket. Works for me.

The jigged bone will hold up fine but the bolsters, badge and blade spines will get scratched up from the keys. I keep keys and coins in a separate pocket from my knives and still tend to use a pocket slip with most knives.

Well I couldn't find a Case with the blades and handles I wanted. I ordered a GEC viper in SS and Amber bone instead. I also ordered the Main Street knife slip to go with it. Hopefully it will carry well.

My opinion is that the bone holds up fine with no issues. The first scratch on the bolsters is a disaster. The next few scratches are annoying. And then the scratches even out and the knife looks just fine again. Becomes more of a satin-ish rather than a polished look.

I'm with you. The onliest reason I orders the knife slip is to keep it upright in the pocket. I hate it when a knife goes sideways in the pocket. It wouldn't be a problem if I stuck with the tiny trapper peanut plan. What can I say. I'm a sucker for larger blades.

In case people think 440c is no good. I'm gonna use and sharpen this knife over and over again.

I used to carry a knife in a pouch but I don't anymore. Then it was mostly to help orientate the knife than to keep it looking new. I don't really mind if a knife's bolsters get scratched up a bit because of keys or coins. I dropped my jigged bone Ken Erickson jack on concrete and got a ding in the bolster and I think it looks great :) Bone held up fine too (one reason I like bolsters on both ends ;))

This has been a great thread. I thought I was the only one to worry about such things. I'm very OCD about carrying a new knife with shiny new bolsters in my pocket with keys and change, etc. I've never used a pocket slip, and I eventually accept the fact that my knife is going to get scratched up. I sometimes pocket carry a small handgun, so it's difficult to dedicate one pocket just for my knife. My EDC is a Buck 503 Prince. Where is a good place to find a slip for a 503 Prince if I decided to try one?
