We live in the UK and are often at work so I thought we could get the perfect pet, a nice 2 foot baby pastel boa !!

No, no and no were the answers !!

How can I convince her ??

Serious one guys - I need your help !!

Ya wanna bring a snake to the British isles? Are you sure you're British?;)

After going thru lotsa cold-blooded pets, I think mammals make better pets. More empathic, less, uh, cold-blooded.

If ya want an aquarium, then stock it with fish...

Keith

there are snakes in England - none in ireland (cept worm snake)

I come from South Africa and miss the little wrigglers !!

No sympathy from me either Two Dogs. :p
I'm with Keith on this subject!!!! Get yerself an aquarium and load it with fish.
Much better choice all around as fish are active almost all the time and are pretty to look at as well as peaceful and good thought provoking.:D

I swear to gawd, the woman is a Saint !!!

Brendan? If you must

Get a three foot piece of 3/4 inch rope. Take a marker and make two eyes on tip of one end. Narrow the other end.

Now, get a piece of monofilament line, tie it around the end with the eyes, and you can train your snake to "walk." Works a charm. AND, has more personality than a reptile.

Aquarium optional.

mutter,mutter,mutter....

Guys - snakes are way cool !!

Think of how amazing they actually are and cast aside your hollywood instilled ideas about them !!

Did ya hear about the near sighted snake? V see below V:D

Two Dogs I don't have Hollywood instilled ideas about anything. :p
Here in Oklahoma and other southern states we have a snake known as a Cottonmouth Water Mocassin. They are very aggresive and will actually chase you if you happen to piss one of 'em off. My uncle Karmen was in a boat fishing one day when one swam by in reach of his fishing pole. Unc proceeded to reach out and tap the damned thing on its head. The damned snake came rushing at the boat and crawled in, Uncle Karmen left the boat!!!! After a while the damned snake crawled back out and went on his way so Unc was finally safe, but you can bet your arse he never messed with another Cottonmouth!!!!
Then we have another one known as a Copperhead.
Unlike a respectable rattlesnake the Copperhead will just lay there until you step on him/her or pick him/her up as they have excellent camoglage but no way to give any warning!!!!
I have a great respect for snakes and I do think they are cool. They just aren't good pets IMO.

The near sighted snake? He raped a rope!!!! :p :D

My friend Kim has a ball python (you know, those ones with a teeny head that are fat in the middle). She's a cutey, very friendly and curious. Get one from a reputable breeder (store-bought are often wild caught and went through shock and trauma, and can be ill or nasty... do you blame them?)
There's not much you can do to convince her, especially since you're gonna be putting dead rodents in the freezer to feed it!!!

I don't think you'll convince the Mrs. to let you bring home a reptile that can reach 12' and eats rabbits. A Rosy Boa, on the other hand, tops out at 2' and will never eat anything bigger than mice. Find one of the prettier color variations and show her a picture. There are some small Pythons that are pretty cute (Cape York Spotted, Children's) as well as the Kenyan Sand Boa. Both around the two foot mark. I think the Ball Python is a beauty as well (that's what we have). Our little Eve is right around the 4' mark and wont get much bigger. Snakes make great pets for people on the go. Good luck.

When I was 10 I wanted a Boa for my Birthday. I got a Daisey BB gun instead.

Brendan- didn't you just get a sword!!!!

Get a stuffed snake. That's what my son's have. You don't have to feed it.

It's probably a preconceived, Hollywood-inspired notion, but I don't think that you'll get far if you're asking a bunch of knifeknuts how to convince the love of your life to accept a pet snake into her household. Maybe you could get a gaggle of mongeese first and then reassure your beloved that the snake will stay in its assigned living quarters under penalty of death?

lol

Yeah, glorified ferrets waiting in the dark. I'm sure she'll be comforted.

I say more power to you. I have been into reptiles for many years and am still fasinated by them. I have an 8 foot Red Tail Boa and he has been a very interesting animal to have around. Snakes are very important to ecosystems and should never be killed on site just because they are misunderstood. Good luck.

Brendan,
Snakes make great pets. I have a Corn snake right now.
I used to have a South American Tiger ratsnake. He was right at 9 feet when I had to get rid of him(apartment rules stink!)
He could get a bit mean at times but I would love to pick up another one.
I really like lizards more than snakes. I have had a couple of the monitor lizards and a 6ft green iguana.
I have a male green basilisk right now. He was captive bred from the Tulsa zoo.
You can always tell her it must have came in from outside.:D
God Bless.

are among the most colorful. Very hardy, easy to take care of. My son has a an albino Lampropeltis nelsoni that is spectacular... My wife won't go into the same room where it's kept!

Dan :)

Now that I've pulled myself off the ceiling realizing that this is just a snake thread and not a real snake I'll say you can bug Hoghead to tell you what I think of snakes and people who drag reluctant unsuspecting women into reptile castles at the San Diego
Zoo.........  :grumpy:
