Jim Austin's Bearded Viking axe Preview

I have to say, Sam, there has never been a video that you've posted that I have not enjoyed. Thanks for the link!

Very cool video ! I wonder why he split, drew out and then forge welded the handle hole rather than hot punching and drifting it to size? Seems like a lot of extra work.. but I'm sure he has his reasons. Using the little indentations/teeth forged in to hold the cutting edge insert while forge welding was a great idea! I love watching axe making videos and such, sometimes I forget you can make things with metal other than knives :D

That was incredible. Some serious skills on display there! Thanks for sharing, Sam.

Wow, how cool is that.
I've always looked at broad axes and wondered what the initial setup was, how to get the right amount of mass in the right place for the bearded part of the blade. Obvious once you see it!
Great video, thanks for sharing it.

Seems like his style is to use struck tools for everything, instead of hitting the steel directly. I like that idea. I haven't done much of it, but it sure seems like you'd have better control.
Of course, if you're not in the vise, then you need an apprentice to swing the hammer, so that's a limiting factor, but that degree of control is something we're all looking for.

Thanks for the link!

Edit: LOVE how the weld just disappears at 4:46.

One of the best ways about showing it done that way is that everyone can put together hand tools and get a friend to strike, not everyone can turn on a power hammer :D
