I got this head from my Aunt's farm. Her husband had it lying around in the old barn. It's a Jim dandy by Kelly tool works I believe.
It has seen plenty of use. This one's sole purpose is to go up to the cabin as a fireplace axe. Splitting kindling and such, nothing special. So I am making no effort to remove the surface rust.
I have a few blank handles around, of what I have this was the best one. Overall its good, just that the wedge slot was sawed crooked. So obviously the wedge went in crooked. However it went in good and tight.
Even though its a beater axe, no point in not finishing it out proper, 40 then 80 grit.
A heavy oiling,
Out to dry,
I wanted to get the red paint off this head, and satin finish it for now. I used a 60 grit sanding flap wheel for the whole job,
Good enough for now. Touch ups when I get it hafted later,
