I got this head from my Aunt's farm. Her husband had it lying around in the old barn. It's a Jim dandy by Kelly tool works I believe.

It has seen plenty of use. This one's sole purpose is to go up to the cabin as a fireplace axe. Splitting kindling and such, nothing special. So I am making no effort to remove the surface rust.

I have a few blank handles around, of what I have this was the best one. Overall its good, just that the wedge slot was sawed crooked. So obviously the wedge went in crooked. However it went in good and tight.

Even though its a beater axe, no point in not finishing it out proper, 40 then 80 grit.

A heavy oiling,

I wanted to get the red paint off this head, and satin finish it for now. I used a 60 grit sanding flap wheel for the whole job,

Good enough for now. Touch ups when I get it hafted later,

Nice job on the axes. For a minute I thought I was having deja vu- went back and looked up your thread with the Jersey being hafted and sheathed. I really like the leather. I found a "N in Circle " axe a while back also. Sandblasted mine then did a quick BBQ grill parkerize on it.
Thanks for posting the pictures

I like that style of haft with a substantial colts foot that hasn't had it the tip cut. With that style, when your little finger hooks on on the end of the haft the top edge of the colts foot extends all the way through your palm. Clipped colts foots cause me blisters on the heel of my palm.

What style of colts foot do you prefer?

I share your preference, but they sure are tough to find! :grumpy:

All you guys have to do, is reshape the foot. I put a flat spot on the end so I could hammer the handle in without breaking the grain open. Once the wedge was driven home, I reshaped the foot. You could never tell otherwise ;)

I tried that on one and the part in my palm came out too short feeling in my hand, if that makes sense. I have a boy's axe to hang that I might try it on again.

I have a quick question about the jersey axe head.
Would a single bit axe handle from handle house with an eye size of 13/16 x 2 7/16 fit the jersey axe head.

I just hafted that head last night, I will post pics in a few hours. I used a house handle. It was their 30" single bit handle.
