I am considering the purchase of a folder and nice examples from Downs and Helton are available to me within my rather modest price range (sub $400). As I will make this purchase via internet, I will not be able to physically compare these knives other than through pictures so I would like to hear the opinions of fellow members concerning the fit, finish, design and quality of materials exhibited by these two makers in their work. Both knives are liner lock. The Downs knife is rather small (5+ '' opened) and has beautiful mammoth scales with nickel bolsters, titanium liners and 440C steel. The Helton is a bit larger (8.1" opened) , with titanium liners, stag scales and clip with an ATS 34 steel blade. I like them both for different reasons. I will use the knife for light tasks at work and when I go camping/hiking. I appreciate good workmanship and quality materials. I am also looking for makers with a good reputation that I can feel proud to own and hand down. I have knives for the more heavy tasks which I won't mind to get damaged a bit in use. Knives, as with all of my tools, are used and well taken care of.

Thanks,

I've owned a few Helton folders and they were very well done. Roy built several custom orders for me and I was very satisfied. Be sure you get an examination period, usually three days, and carefully check out whatever you buy.
