I want to share a piece that I have been after for a very long time and is finally now part of my permanent collection.
this piece Autumn Leaves really showcases the genius of master Damascus maker Phillip Baldwin and master artist Jim Kelso.

Dan, congrats ........ I saw this piece on Don Fogg's forum a few weeks ago and thought it amazing. That handle is exquisit and the damascus is good looking too.

One of the finest pieces of workmanship I have ever seen - and that's saying alot, coming from someone who doesn't care for damascus! My eyes just keep roaming over the image, trying to take it all in. A feast for the eyes, a great piece, Dan.

That is a fantastic piece of art and a great photo as well. Superb. Thanks for sharing it.
Cheers Keith

Beautiful piece. Phillip Baldwin was my blacksmithing instructor at Penland back in 1981 - a very talented man.

This is absolutely one of the most beautiful things I have ever seen...WOW!!! I would LOVE to see this in person some day!

Just spectacular. If you haven't checked out Jim's work.. please do. His work (which goes way beyond knives) is at the highest caliber of metal work today... and beyond. This piece is quite a bit more detailed than I'm used to seeing from him. Sometimes the simplicity of his work is mind blowing in what it achieves as visual stimulus.

Wow! That is an amazeing piece of work and art!

Congrats!

I'm a big Jim Kelso fan and this is just spectacular. (sorry Scott for using your word but it's the first thing that came to mind. :p)

I would like to see a little more of that scabbard though.

I just came in here to say just that.

This is a dilemma when a knife has SO much to offer. You just can't fit it all in one rectangle.

Show us another rectangle with the knife inside the scabbard.... :)

Here is a photo of the knife and the scabbard, and another knife that was a Baldwin/Kelso collaboration from Jim's website, with your permission, Dan:

Phil is a great maker, you can see two of his pieces in my collection under the "Knife People" contribution in Dr. David Darom's "The World of Art Knives". Phil does not make knives or even blades in the general sense much anymore as he is very busy crafting mokume gane', shibuichi and shakudo for the jewelry industry, although he has a continuing interest in metals for knifemakers:

Jim Kelso was demonstrating lost wax casting(most likely how he made this handle) when I attended my first Ashokan seminar in 1986 or 1987, a short time later, I saw the fittings he was demonstrating on a finished absolutely breathtaking collaboration with Louis Mills...there is no photo on Jim's site, but I do think it is in one of the Weyer books.

Wow what a score. I am a huge fan of Jim's work and this is why. Really amazing stuff, if you haven't seen any of his work you owe it to yourself t check out his webpage.

there's a lot to take in here. The most impressive thing to me, atm, is the symmetry of the pattern welded blade. It looks bang on and that can't be easy!

An outstanding example of Functional Art.
A fine custom knife such as this makes a great impression on the broad fine collectible community.:thumbup::thumbup::thumbup:

I wholeheartedly agree with everything that's been said, just insanely nice.
It's only ground on one side, right ?
Superb art knife, Congrats Dan !
