Fellow members,
I have a Jimmy Lile number seven, fixed blade knife from the late 70's-early 80's. It has the block lettering parallel to the hilt and without a dot. The grips are very well figured stag. What kind of steel was Lile primarily using during this period for his blades? Was it D-2 or 440C?

Thank you,

You can tell the difference between 440c and D2 in corrosion resistance. If it stays shiny after processing game it's probably 440C.

I actually have that same model on my bench at the moment for edge reworking and light TLC. If it's an original no dot Lile, it is going to be the carbon alloy steel, as the corrosion on this well used blade can attest.

Lile knives were either 440C or D2 and corrosion resistance would be the best way to tell the difference.
