I took my Italian 4Max apart to do some mods and cleaning. This is what I found. I read elsewhere that there were some spinning pivot issues with this model. I guess this is the "fix" for that issue.

This is brand new, straight out of the box.

How old is your Max? My Italian Max is from the original batch and has the same little doohickey. I thought it was an odd way of keying a scale and pivot, but it being a fix makes more sense. What I'm thinking is this: one version of the original American Max didn't have a keyed scale or liner (D hole), and perhaps the Italians used this model in making theirs, then realized the issue and applied this fix before sending them out. Who knows? It would be interesting to take a brand new Italian Max apart and see if they still have this or if they're making the scale or liner with a D hole now.

It’s potentially stronger this way instead of machining the d hole into the g10. I’ve got multiple instances of the d hole on g10 getting stripped/worn completely round due to over torquing, preventing the the pivot to be loosened(im one of those assholes who red locktite their pivot). With this hack, it might have less chance of it deforming.
Obviously they shoud have just made the d hole on the liners which would be the strongest.

I too have felt the draw of the red loctite. :)
I have heard this idea (that it's stronger this way) from others. I will wait to hear what Cold Steel says.

I just bought this a couple weeks ago, but it was from an ebay retailer, so there's no way to know how old it is. It would be cool if they used this as an upgrade, but I haven't seen an American 4Max without the D hole.
