KYturkey asked me an interestng questio the other day during an email exchange o a different subject
What did I thik of the hiker I had (and since traded to TPVT) and the ichigan trail knife?
Well I hadn't got around to using the MTK yet and it hadn't occured to me t compare the two, it's bee a while since I'd seen a comparrison thread around here, and I've heard more then one person suggest the Hiker make it's way back int the line up (i am one of them), so, here we are.
Here are the specs (the hiker is as I remember it since it's no longer in the line up):
MTK: (jds1 design) 8" oal, 3 3/4" blade, 1/8" thick, o1 steel
Hiker: (Jk design?) 8.5 oa, 4 blade, o1 steel, 1/8
I like 'em both, of course, and didn't want to see either of them go, but thats the way of it sometimes. They are very comparable in terms of specs, I think the Hiker ran around 1/2 a inch longer, if I remember right, but they are both Kinda 'bullnosed" woods knife to my eye.
I got quite a bit of experience with the hiker, it rode in my hike bag for quite a while and helped out with the fire wood last winter a lot. My experience with the MTK on the other hand was short (and sweet) and limited. So I have to stick to a kinda "in hand" comparison and would really like to hear any feedback other folks who've used these knives, or either one, could share.
My comparison:
In hand, the hiker felt "chunky" more so then the MTK, of course I picked up the hiker second hand (stole it is what I did for the price) and the MTK I ordered myself, and all that can be changed. However the Hiker also just seemed shorter in the handle (which it is) enough that you can tell a real difference when you get a hold of the MTK.
The MTK had an almost a perfect "extra room" aspect to it without feeling like your hand was stranded. In fact jds1' design, I think, kicked this out the park. It' felt simple yet contoured, roomy yet grippy. Also I think the point on the MTK seemed a little more defined and so perhaps more useful if you like to drill, score, carve etc
I liked the Hiker, and can't say I'd chose one over the other - why when you can have both after all! - and though it may seem strange to those folks who have been around here longer then me - most all of you
- it kinda felt like havign a bit of JK history. I think it fits it's name, it was a whatever comes, all purpose knife. If asked to choose, at gun point...I'd get shot.
just for what it's worth,
Which brings me to another question, what knife would you like to see come back for a limited run. or even a place in the line up? not a new question, but I do like seeing those pictures,
