Hi folks -

John, Mr. Sogetsu, jds1, outdoorsfan, uncle bill, camaroz28 and myself had a great time today, even though it rained all day long.

We sat around my kitchen and played with knives, had sodas, coffee and beer, and a great time showing off our $20 survival kits, our fishing kits, and talking knives.

I let everyone check out the cool Kershaw/ZT knives from morrowj_98's passaround:

John brought an outstanding array of knives to give away, pictured here - Thank you so much, John, for your generosity - a wonderful bunch of knives!

Each person then laid out their $20 survival kit - John started first:

Johns kit included a saw and lots of great, cheap finds, including a pot for cooking, a tarp, some "goodwill" knives etc.

jds1 followed with his awesome kit - including the "monster" dollar store knife:

Jeff had many interesting items in his kit, including a camp-stove, a nice blanket, and many well-thought out freebies that made up a kit that would certainly help one survive if it were made necessary.

Then outdoorsfan showed off his winning kit - as voted by the crowd:

Sean had made many ingenious items for his kit, much of it made from a discarded leather coat he acquired for free.

Mr. Sogetsu showed us how to tie a paracord lanyard, and also had made one for each of us - thanks, Steve! I put mine on my JK Ti Framelock!

It wouldn't be a gathering if Steve didn't leave a little bloodwork behind:

Jacob won his first JK Handmade knife, an extended length tin-knife with micarta handles and sheath, a knife that someone ordered and then never paid for, so John gave it away at the gathering.

I won this cute little JK knife in the random drawing that John held:

Everyone won something - I think everyone won at least one JK knife and another production knife of some sort:

Jeff gave Uncle Bill the monster dollar store knife - it takes two hands to handle the whopper!

We could not talk John into giving away his beautiful liner lock #1 - it is a real beauty, with smooth action and oozing quality. Someone is going to get a really awesome knife, this one is still available!

Here is a nice assortment of JK #1's

Steve caught a fish almost the instant we got to the dock:

He was using a pole from my tackle collection, so he was not officially in the competition. The fishing competition was officially a skunking, nobody fishing with their fishing kit caught anything but a good time. Uncle Bill caught the largest fish of the day:

I was using my purple screw-worm with a ball-bearing swivel, and spyderwire from my Ti Survival spool. I must have tied a bad knot, as the first "cast" with my rustic pole resulted in a bass hitting the worm and taking the worm and swivel off of my line and into the deep. I never got another bump the rest of the time I fished.

Here is a view of the guys fishing from the dock -

John with his poncho - it rained the whole time...

We came back to my house and cooked up the steaks and potatoes, and heated up the Boss's awesome baked beans - those were tasty!!

Now there is a bunch of great guys, great food, and wonderful conversation:

Thanks to everyone for showing up, I had a great time and I hope we can do this again and often. Hopefully the next event will be dry and sunny.

Looks like you guys had fun. I sure wish I could've been there.

Thank you for hosting Andy! It was good seeing everybody and chilling out. Also, thank you to everyone for sharing our conversations, ideas, skills, and gifts.

Hi Guys -

Mack, we'll get one of these scheduled so you can be there - we really need you to be at one of these!

Steve - thanks again for the lanyard - it is the trick for my folder - makes it easy to pull out of my pocket - I will never be able to tie knots like you can!

Sean - thanks for the Trapper! It is really a sweet knife!

Thanks to John, I got the worlds smallest JK Knife with sheath, and a sweet little Buck Gent's knife.

I really am blessed to know all of you guys - it is one of the highlights of my year when I get to meet up with you guys.

I'll take pictures of all of the great gifts from the event and post them here. My granddaughters are here tonight, so I get to spend time trying to keep up with them.

It is still raining here, by the way....

best regards -

Thanks for the pics. Definitely looks like a great time, even with the weather.

Andy, thanks again for hosting this event, I had a ball! Be sure to thank your wife for picking out those steaks, they sure were tasty. To all of you who made it, it was great seeing you all again, hope we can do it again soon.

It was a great time, as usual. Thanks to everyone who attended, it was good to see you all again. Special thanks to mqqn for hosting and John for the awesome give-aways! I think my new camp knife has been confiscated by my wife for use in the kitchen. Her Global knife may not be seeing so much use anymore!

That $1 poncho was a lifesaver! I was a little worried when it said "one size fits most," that I would look like a Saran wrapped hotdog, but it was plenty big.

As mentioned, a great time was had by all. Thanks for the hospitality Andy, and thanks to John for the great (and my first) JK knife!

I'm looking forward to the next event, I'll need to get in on the survival kit contest if it's done again. It was good meeting all you guys. Thanks again!

Great pics! One of these days I want to get my butt to a gathering. They look like fun. What knife is in the second pic, just above and to the right of you worlds tiniest JK?

You should try to make one of these. That knife is an extended Tin Knife, that I put maple burl handles on.

I made it back to Michigan. Many thanks to our awesome host Andy, John for his generosity in gifting so many cool knives, and the rest of you guys for showing up to make another memorable Gathering. As usual, I'm already looking forward to the next time! Take care everybody.

Jeff

I thought I would put names with the faces.

From left to right, we have outdoorsfan, Uncle Bill, jds1, Z28Camaro, mqqn, and Mr. Sogetsu.

I know this is WAY too soon to start planning our Fall Gathering, but I was thinking of renting us a rustic cabin in the Waterloo Pinckney Recreation Area for some weekend in late September or early October. Those who wanted to make it a day event could do so, but you have the option of spending Saturday night as well. The cabins sleep eight with lots of space for tents too. Tons of great hiking, fishing, paddling or just hanging out. Here's a link to the area. Let me know what you guys think. This place is about 3 1/2 hours from John's house. It would be great to see some new faces too!
