Have you ever held a tool that seemingly transfers you backwards in time?
That is the overwhelming impression I had when I first held Johns Green River knife. From the warmth of the Oak handle to the icy coldness of the 5 inch blade, everything about this knife speaks of yesteryear and a time when simple hand tools often meant the difference between life and death.
Perhaps it is my overactive imagination, but each time I grab the hand-filling handle I have faint visions of myself butchering a bison, fashioning stakes for beaver traps or skinning out a wolf. If I really concentrate, I can almost taste the fire-roasted venison as my minds eye watches me carve off a healthy hunk of the loin.

Blade 5 inches
1/8 inch 01 Tool Steel
Oak Handle
Brass Pins
I wasnt kidding when I said this knife takes me back to yesteryear. It does and it does so in a big way. Its beauty is its plainness: it has everything it needs and nothing that it doesnt. This is a working tool, built with purpose in mind and straight forward intent. It was made to be used and used hard. This is a knife that will look its very best when it has a history of use and the battle scars to prove it.
Fit and finish is superb. There are no gaps, the grind is nice and even and the handle wears like your favorite pair of worn leather gloves. In fact the handle is almost magical in the way it fills your hand telling you instantly that this is no toy youre messing with.

Im tempted to call this Green River knife a jack-of-all-trades kind of tool: it seems to do everything well, but isnt specialized for any one task. It carves, it drills divots with ease, it slices meats and vegetables and itll do a fair job of chopping when necessary. The back of the blade is squared off and does and excellent job of scraping the inner bark for stringy fibers. Im sure it would work well for sparking a fire-steel, but since I dont have one, I couldnt try that out.
I was going to say this knife would be absolutely perfect for those who like to participate in the mountain man events. But that would be selling the knife short and that just wouldnt be fair to you or the knife. Sure, this Green River knife would look right at home tucked in a belt next to a flintlock revolver, but this is a knife that begs to be used in real world situations not just recreations.
With that in mind, I heartily recommend this knife to anybody who has need (or want) of a knife.
That would be you.
And me.
But Ive already got mine. Now its just a matter of waiting for 5-10 years so I can see just how beautiful a lot of use will make this one.
