I've been putting some underused JK knives to task lately and next up is the LRK plus - or last resort knife - a super sized version of the original "tin knife' sized LRK. It's hard to give a review of this one because of the nature of the LRK plus. It's basicaly JK's "customize your own custom knife" project :D. So the handle is the one I made for it, the sheath is one I had Rick, from RG leather, made for it (it had already suffered enough humiliation with my attempts at scales without sufferig my attempts at sheaths), you can add thumb serrations, pick your own blade shape and finish (forge or satin) and I'm guessing anything else you may have in mind as well.

It has some "beauty marks” from where I made slip up's makeing the scales, but in my defense considering some of the stages I went though:

FYI: you can add a micarta hadnle to it from JK for no much more, but I wanted to give it a go.

This knife is very well priced and it is exteremely well ground. In fact playing with it today I could swear this "saber grind" (i think it is) gets sharper the more I use it on wood. Could be my imagination or I'm just finding the edge better with practice. So far 've used it to cut eat my meals with and turn a number of sticks to piles of burnable shadows of there former self. But I don't think it's a"last resort knife" any more. this could be a main blade, easy.

I like the blade shape, even though I have been know to like a finer point, and I've been able to make some delicate forward cuts with it from meat to feather sticks.

Since JK will put any blade shape on it you want - drop pint, wharnie, clip etc - s'up to you but I've been loving the standard one, kind of a spear point but slightly higher then centre.

Kinda reminds me of a Spyderco bushcrafter, though I've never seen one in person.

Overall it's a very useful blade with a kick ass grind that for any price is well worth a go. I think it might be a bit small for a general woods knife for many but I think it'd do most everything you could ask it unless you like to baton things a lot that are over 3" long. Still it may fit in as an edc better then anything and one you can feel proud to carry around because you put some of the work.

I think JK may have hit on a great idea here, lots of use like to pick up Izulas and BK14/11's cheaper then they might come with a handle and then paracord wrap them, so why not do it with a quality custom knife from a BF proud maker, especially since the price put it into direct competition with them?...don't ask me, I did it, feels good to.

Thanks,

Hi Peter -

Nice review and pictures.

I also thought your scales came out looking very much like the burl on the Spyderco Bushcrafter. Your scales look very smooth and comfortable to hold.

I think the LRK+ is a very good size for all around work, and since it is in the smaller knife range, it is light and easy to pack if you are hiking or not wanting to take a lot of extra weight along.

I also like the heat-treat finish, which is a no-nonsense, means business look.

Thanks again for the review of a great way to get into a custom, handmade knife at a very reasonable price.

Thanks for the compliments Mqqn, I agree about the heat treat finish as well, its all business :)

Hi KYenglish -

I wanted to add a pic of my version - I asked Mr. K to make this one with Amendoin wood (yrburra) handle slabs, since this wood is very hard and will not shrink. It also has a nice chatoyancy.

I think this is a great knife to have with you in the woods - it has John's rugged 01 steel, a nice 4-finger handle, and just the right amount of blade to give you great leverage for push-cuts in wood, for notching etc.

I am a little surprised that Mr. K does not sell more of these - especially for the folks who, like yourself, want to make their own customizations.

One would be hard pressed to find a custom made knife for less cash.

thanks mqqn, that's a great looking LRK plus, i keep meaning to get another one I expected them to have sold more buy now as well, still it cuts the weight time down :)

Looks like a winner to me. It's a serious fixed blade IMO. I've had good look with O1 tool steel. I'm also quite fond of the rougher finish. It's obviously a knife intended to use.
