I just bought the antler handled JKM-1 from todays deals. I remember many of you modified them with choils and such. I know a few of you guys posted pictures of JKM modifications in the past, but the pictures are gone from the old posts. Please feel free to post some ideas or old pictures.

Thanks

Thanks raghorn. Does your JKM have a particulary small handle?

I found it to be too small for me at first, but it's probably the typical size for a JKM-1. With the modifications I use it all the time now. This time of year it hangs from my hunting daypack in a Sarki Shop sheath.

Raghorn, the choil is a great idea! Hmmm.

Jeb, I got mine today and love it. The handle is small, a 3 finger grip for my small hands. Filed thumb grooves, convexed the edge, stained the antler just a tad, put some Edgecote on the bare edges of the sheath. Sweet little knife
! :) A poorly lit picture is attached.

Nice Job Steve.:)
For staining antler or bone to look really old; soak it in an instant tea with lemon added. The citric acid of the lemon helps the tea to penetrate the bone especially as it's usually not as porous as antler.
Depending on the porosity depends on how long you leave it in, dosn't take long on some projects.
Also the stronger the tea is will, of course, make a difference in how long it needs to soak.;)
Heating it up and rubbing it with hot vegetable oil will sometimes give it that beautiful translucent color in places that I like so much.:D

I have an antler/bone kumar karda coming in a week or so. I plan on making it look just like your JKM.
I may even make a dangle sheath for it.

Steve,

you don't know how to take a bad picture.

Very nice.

I'm coming to love dangle sheaths, for convenience and concealability. Sticking it in the back pocket of pants keeps it legal, but inconspicuous if it is attached to the belt, or belt loop, I think.

But I'm kind of in love with puukko shapes for their utility as it is.

Raghorn? How big is that knife? They are listed at 6 inches, but most seem to be in the 8 inch range..

JKM's are the best little knives. It's the only HI you can carry every day... I wanted a kerambit, but at 9" I think it would hang out of one's pocket. Nice mods ferguson & raghorn. I did find the leather was so "green" (& moist) on my first JKM that it would put black pre-rust spots on the edge if I wasn't careful. My Kesar horn JKM sure could use the choil/grooves treatment, but my antler Kumar has a lot less room for the choil.. the Kesar one has "non-cho" creep!

Anybody got any creative carry mods? I find I can just put JKM in my left front levi pocket- fits and doesn't show. Maybe a fake wallet type back pocket sheath would work... The puukko is so old, some things can't really be improved upon.

Mine goes on the belt or the waist strap of my hunting pack. In case you guys haven't figured it out yet I REALLY LOVE THIS KNIFE!! :D

Here's the one I keep at my desk at work. Originally it had an etch from the company bottle of mustard. Also in the pic is the cardboard and duct tape sheath. Classy. :)

To keep the handle slabs from cracking, I've been using forehead grease. :D

That would be a great carry system for a JKM-1!!!!

On the other hand A.G. Russell has a great little paring/woodsman knife that is available with just such a flat sheath that I have been looking at for a long while, but like so many other things that are either cheap or very reasonable one I have yet too purchase.
Stopped too look in the Christmas 2004 catalog and found it. It is called the A.G. Russell "Woodswalker" and also can be had with a kydex scabbard for wear as a neck knife.
The knife with leather sheath that fits in a back pocket goes for
$19.95 and the knife with kydex scabbard is $24.95, the knives alone are $9.95 and the kydex sheath as they are calling it is $15.00 alone. So for $35.00 plus shipping you can have a dual carry system that is perfect for bird and trout as well as emergency self defense use.
The little 2-1/4" bladed paring knife for $9.95 would make great cheap but very useful Christmas gifts for all the ladies in your lives. They're AUS-8 Stainless @ 57-59 Rc!
Sorry didn't mean to get off on a tangent but I love these little knives, don't know why I haven't got any yet.
Back to the subject at hand. :footinmou ;)

The same rig could be made for the JKM-1 but most people like me would have to farm the kydex scabbard out to a person with some experience working it.
What do y'all think about a JKM-1 as a neck knife? Would the handle be too thick you think?
Of course all knife modifications would have to be done first and you would be pretty much locked in with what you had done as any future mods might render the scabbard unusable.

Actually forehead, nose, ear, or any fresh body oil are excellent preservatives for all natural materials such as horn. After all animal horns and hooves are somewhat preserved by the animals own natural oils anyway. :D

You've seen and handled my JKM and homemade sheath Edutsi...slimming and reprofiling the grip is the next thing I have planned...
