Well, I made it to the medieval event this weekend in time to find out it was rained out. Still, I got to see some old friends, down a couple pints of Guinness, and show off my HI blades a wee bit. Folks were so delighted with my Tarwar and Kumar Karda, with it's elaborately carved handle, that I almost forgot I was carrying my JKM as well.
Here's the deal, my medieval boots come to just below the knee. It has long been my habit to carry my "big pretty" knives on my belt, and a small, but very sharp, working/eating knife in my boot. The JKM is taylor made for that role. It's blade is the proper length, and it's guardless handle of smooth black horn is very comfortable and snag free on the draw. In a flat scabbard with a tie thong that goes around the calf, it's perfectly happy to live in a boot and not cause any fuss 'til it's called upon. I'm sure the kamis at Bir Ghorka have never heard of a Sgian Dubh, but the JKM fits the description, and the role, very, very, well.
