Both pieces of my order arrived today. One was the 16.5 inch 24 ounce WWII village style by Kumar with the Hill walnut handle. Looks absolutely perfect and has a nicely ground (and very sharp) edge. It handles so well that its almost alive in my hand. Think I prefer the steel furniture and wood handle over the brass and horn.

The one I really want to comment on is the 8 inch 6 ounce JKM by Kumar. It has a beautiful rato chandan handle. I love the blade shape and it feels perfect in my hand. Will be a favorite for my general purpose knife. Anyone who hasn't checked into this knife is missing a bet for an outstanding blade.

I never had a real forged hand made knife before and am extremely well impressed with the quality workmanship of the blades I've received. They will both be put to good use in the woods and field.

Good snags, Ice:)

There are several of us that swear by the humble little JKM. i carry mine every day.

Excellent choices! Remember that they are carbon steel and need to have a thin coat of oil to prevent rust.

Cool Ice! (no pun intended! (-:))

I spotted that WWII Villager with the very unique hill walnut handle right away but was too late on it. Maybe only 1 or 2 handles of that type have shown up in the past year as I recall, and much more attractive than a regular villager IMO. You got a good deal and a nice snag there!

I also was fortunate enough to get one of the Kumar JKM's a couple of months ago with the chandan handle. Really dresses up an already pretty little knife.

Congrats on a couple of good catches!

Regards,

Norm

Welcome Ice!

Do you own other HI khuks to be able to compare steel and wood furniture to brass and horn? You really shouldn't give up on horn too soon, depending upon the climate where you live, horn can be an outstanding choice as handle material.

Hi Munk, thank you

I have a horn and brass AK made by Bura. The thing is so pretty its almost like artwork. Almost too pretty to use though I did put a fine convex edge on it. Have even used it for chopping work before I got the villager. Guess I speaking from the aesthetic standpoint vs. the practical using standpoint. Sorry, I should have been clearer.

Don't mind Josh, he gets too focused on Bura. These were your first hand forged blades? Wow. You put a convex edge on one; not too many people know about convex edges. I sure didn't when I got here, though it turns out my old Man taught me how to sharpen knives that way.

how do you put a convex edge on? Is there a web resource? Apologies if this has been covered recently...

Speaking of knives, what do you think of the other knives offered by HI?

Welcome, Green Ice.

I like JKM's a lot 'cause you can't always have a HI khuk with you. (duh)
You can, though, a JKM.

I've broken swiss army knives in use. Don't think it'll happen with a JKM.

Lucky me, I have a purpleheart JKM, USA antler and others... all are my fav for daily carry.

Hey Ice,

So you're the one that beat me to that little beauty the other day. :grumpy:

Congratulations! It also looked like it had a pretty nice, simple sheath with it as well.

Enjoy :D :D

Love my antler JKM. Reminds me of a blade-heavy Bark River Forager.

I think it would be happy in a pouch sheath. :D

Welcome to the flock or whatever ( you'll understand when you start getting fleeced every month and still come back for more ).

Amazing what the sweat and blood and toil of the kami's labor can do to impart a spirit into a knife, isn't it? An aliveness no machine made knife comes with - oh, it can become yours by years of use - but as Uncle Bill says, a handforged knife seems to pick it's rightful owner.

I've never had a JKM but the Kumar Kardas are something else. Enjoy!

You are right on Rusty as to the Kumar Kardas...but when do are ready for a daily carry knife that won't scare anyone who spots it, have Dan fix you one up like we did mine at the MWKK...you'd love it! :D
