While trying to figure out why ya'all like the JKM so much, I went to the shopping site again and looked more carefully at the handle, which is really my only complaint. Eric had pointed out that the handle seemed shorter than the rest, so I went and looked and tis quite true. How long are the other handles on your JKM's? My handle part is only 2.5 inches with another inch of metal before the blade actually starts. It feels uncomfortable to me i suppose because I'm afraid my hand will slip. I just can't get a good grip.

Mine's 2.75" with an inch of unsharpened blade. It takes a little getting used to but part of the palm rests against the butt of the knife to sort of prevent slipping. I figure as long as I don't go around stabbing people it's a pretty good utility knife.

Since that inch of unsharpened blade isn't hardened, it files down pretty easy. With a large 1/2 round mill bastard, it's not hard to put in a finger choil. Then wrap progressively finer grades of sandpaper around the file to polish.

File work or notches on top for the thumb can help too. Also, it might take a little bit of smoothing out the corners on the pommel before it's comfy to palm it as Bruise suggests.
