Just received mine in the mail and really like the blade. Those of you in the know, are the handles always around 3 Inches?

I think that most of them are. I have an oddball JKM that I pounced on because it had a 4-inch long handle -- it looks out of proportion, but feels great in my hand.

steely guns had a thread thats just a little down the page now about his JKM, evidently some people grind out a choil into the bottom inch of the blade to act as a finger groove

Yeah, they all tend to be a tad on the short side in regards to the handle. One of the reasons that a choil was ground into the older ones is that the kamis at the time decided it needed a lot of creep at the edge junction. Basically, it was a large un-edged section that was just dying to have a choil cut into it.

The newer ones seem to have the edge terminating at the top of the slabs as is traditional to the design. You could still put a choil in there, but you'd be grinding into a finished edge. nothing wrong with that other than it feels like i'm wasting their talent ;)

I'd use the JKM as a 3 finger knife. Sharpen it up really well and keep it for generally cutting tasks and fine work. You can still pry around with it if you watch your piggies;)

I'd also be on the lookout for the some of the YCS kardas that come up on the DotD from time to time. Lots of blades, lots of handle, and there is already a pre-made dip to keep your fingers of the danger zone:)
