Right now, someone has a forged Cordova hunter for sale here on BF. While beautiful, I am concerned about practical functionality of the knife. I am not someone who collects showpieces for the sake of having them -- I only keep a knife if I am going to use it and it will be useable basically for life. Does anyone have any direct experience with using a knife made by Joe Cordova, or has anyone heard about the use of one by someone else? My usage would be general light to medium type stuff, field dressing game, etc.

Also, for anyone that wants to check out the thread:

Also, for those willing to tell me their opinion re the asking price, what is a fair asking price???

Interestingly enough, while the thread has been viewed a bunch of times, there still is not one comment in it. To me, I take this as a signal to be even more cautious.

Any thoughts would be appreciated.

I don't think you need to be cautious about a listing by AV8R. At all. I am not an expert on Cordova, but I have bought from AV8R on the exchange and he is at the top to deal with. Plus, with what little I know of the maker and the steel used, I would say more consideration is needed on your part. It would be a good one to have.

In all honesty, I am not particularly concerned about the seller. It is just that there is so little information out there about Cordova knives that I don't know whether I should be concerned about getting it as a user, or if it is overpriced for what you get relative to other knifemakers. What I like and don't like about a knife is easy, but some of the more subtle distinctions between knives, some of which can't easily be seen but only known over time with use or known based upon other knives made by the same maker, is what I am having a hard time with. That is why I am trying to seek opinions from you folks, the ones I consider to be the experts in custom knives. I just don't have $600 to spend on a mistake. If a Fisk bowie was offered at that price, I think we'd all agree that it was likely a great deal. But a Cordova hunter? Please, somebody must have some insight.

I have kown Joe for many years. He is a very good Mastersmith who has been making knives for over fifty years. I have two of Joe's knives and they are very fine knives. Joe worked with Loveless in the Loveless shop back in the late sixties and seventys. Looking at that knife I would say Joe would get $450.00 to $500.00 for it. You wont go wrong with a Cordova made knife.

I didn't read that you were concerned about the seller, though my response may sound that way. I was just saying the seller will shoot straight with you and I would bet the product is good. I would want to know the estimated value, also. Good luck!

Joe and everyone else: Thanks a lot for the good comments. I appreciate it,

Pete

Just thought everyone would like to know... based in part on everyone's input here, I decided to go ahead and take the plunge on this knife. It will be my first custom, and I am very excited to get her. I guess I'm just a sucker for the beautiful/functional combination. Thanks everyone!

Congratulation on the purchase. Joe Cordova is not only a tremendous maker but a heck of a nice guy too. If you have any questions drop him a line. I am sure he would be glad to talk with you.

Chuck
