Joe Flournoy Drop Point

Acquired this in a recent trade and decided to send to Joe for a refurb. Just got it back and it looks beautiful! The photo does not show it but a temper line is clearly visible to the eye and really adds to the aesthetic appearance.

Specs:
Metallurgy: 01 Tool Steel
Blade Length: 4.0”
OAL: 8.0”
Handle: Polished Stag
File Work: Rope Pattern, from the ricasso to the butt

Joe tells me this is one-of-a-kind filework for him. I initially thought that because the file work is raised, it would be uncomfortable to use. I could not have been more wrong. Not only does the file work disappear into my palm, it really enhances the “grip”. I can hold the knife in a variety of ways using the file work to securely hold the knife. Made in 1988, before Joe acquired his Mastersmith certification this knife is a great example of his talent. It is not flashy but stunning in its simplicity.

Awesome! Looks both comfortable, effective, and stylish. I like the filework too - both for its function and aesthetics.

My first impression - simple but elegant! Love that file work! That polished stag seems like it would be a fine medium for some scrimshaw - any chance? That was definitely a great trade!

Thanks guys! I'm glad I made the trade.

Re scrimshaw, the thought crossed my mind too.

What do you guys suggest for a subject?

My preference for scrimshaw would be something dealing with dogs! I want to honor my deceased Scottish Terriers & my present 4 footed friend, Clyde - a Dalmation looking mutt! I think any wildlife scene would be terrific! How about a couple of Rocky Mountain goats buttin' heads on a mountain? A few bellowing Elk? or Moose? How about a Mountain Lion stalking a couple of Rocky Mountain goats near some bellowing Elk? Let the scrimshander go wild with his/her ideas! What would you consider having scrimshawed on your hunter?

I like the dog idea! I put down my 14 year old Schnauzer Max, due to cancer last year and miss him. It would be a good way to remember him.

I also like the wildlife scene idea. I was in Alaska earlier this year and like everyone who goes there, fell head-over-heels in love with it's wild, untamed beauty. A grizzly might be a good choice. Perhaps attacking a caribou or maybe... do the grizzly on one side and a caribou on the other.

What do ya think?

Do you have any recommendations for a scrimshander?

Funny coincidence? A stray I found at work & brought home was a small white schnauzer I named Max! Fantastic dog but he wasn't welcome by my other 2 dogs at the time. Found him a home with a great family in the next town to me. I have no experience with a scrimshander but check out www.kabstudio.com I found this site to be interesting!

Clydetz:

Naming your "found" Schnauzer Max is a coincidence...although Max seems to be a popular name for Schnauzers. My Max's full name was Maxillian Von Schnaps XVIII. The XVIII(18)was added by the U.S. Kennel Club when I registered the name about 15 years ago. (Apparently, 17 other Schnauzer owners decided this was a good name before I did).

Thanks for the hot link to Kristen's web site. I may just start a dialogue with her about Joe's knife.

Thanks Ron!

Don't worry, I didn't trade one of yours to get it.

How are you?

How about a train going through a mountain pass with the smoke trailing up into the filework. Or, a jar of peanut butter? :D

The train idea is creative; the peanut butter suggestion is well...tacky, I mean gooey:D

That is some gorgeous filework on one of my favorite bladesteels :)

Very nice piece..., thanks...
