I have found something I need help with. The local pawn shop owner came up with a Joe Holbert Handmade with the Scagel Stamp next to it It has a three and 3/4 inch blade and stacked leather handle with the Scagel antler butt piece.

From a few feet away it looks like a Scagel. I am confused, guys. What do I have?

Scagel was so renowned that many makers emulated the style, even using his stamp as a tribute.

If the blade is stamped 'Joe Holbert' I would be 100% certain you have a nice replica. This is a maker not even listed in any of the Knives Annuals (I checked 1990-2008), so his work is unfamiliar. (And probably not valuable beyond the usage of the knife as a good tool.)

Thanks for asking. Welcome to Bladeforums! :)

Jim

The blade says "J Holbert Handmade" and next to that is the Scagel dagger. Very well put together knife. One comment I read was that of all the copiers he was the best.

Thanks.....

Sweet. Better than expected.

Just FYI Joe Holbert is not a big nationally known knife figure, but his knives are highly prized by collectors in the Ohio, Indiana, and Northern Kentucky area where he is from. His knives are hand forged, extremely well made, and great representations of the Scagel form. I have many of his knives that I have been buying for 20+ years, and can attest to their quality. The values for his knives have been steadily rising. Many of his knives have sheaths made by Jim Layton of Portsmouth,Ohio(a top maker of sheaths), making a great addition to these fine knives.

Jim Layton made the sheaths for Bob Papp, Elyria, OH, if I recall correctly. Really high quality workmanship.

If you get another one of these knives in your establishment in the future, please contact me. The man who made these is my uncle and he passed this week. He had no knives finished and I am trying to get one. I always thought there was time, and didn't want to interfer with his making them for his customers. Now there will never be anymore made. :( So if you get anymore, please contact me.

Dave T would you be willing to sell me one of these knives? Joe Holbert was my uncle, and I always was going to have him make me one but I never wanted to interfer with him making for his customers. Uncle Joe passed away this past weekend and there will be no more knives. I am trying to find any that someone may no longer want.
