Warren Osborne called me yesterday to inform me that Joe Kious, our friend and fellow knife maker died in an automobile accident yesterday. I don't have any other specifics at this time, but I know I will miss my friend, Joe.

Sorry to hear the sad news. His daughter in law was a doctor of mine here at UCLA. a while back. I will see if I can look her up to send condolences.

What a terrible loss. Condolences to the family and he will be another maker I will certainly miss as I ALWAYS made sure I went to his table and chatted with him for some length of time at any show we both attended going back into the late 80's. Great maker with knives that will last thru the ages.

A shock!

Joe was one of the greats, and a real gentleman.

Condolences to the family and friends, smoke sent!

Best,

Steven Garsson

So sorry to hear about this. Condolences to his family and friends. He leaves an impressive body of work--such an accomplished artist. What a loss.

I first met Joe at the 1980 Knifemaker's Guild show. The first knife I ordered from him was actually for my wife! One of gold/pearl miniature folding knives. She still wears in to this day. Watched as Joe was just getting started and to where he progressed...it was an amazing ride! The knife world lost a truly great craftsman. An always humble gentleman, Joe was a friend to everyone. Sad day in the LoneStar state. I'll share a couple of my prized pieces from Joe.

I happened on Facebook last night and a collector sent me a PM that she'd heard from Tony Bose about this.

I've waited to see who would deliver this tragic news. Thank you Paul. Ugghhh. Tough deliverance.

I think Joe is right behind RWL in sheer amount of images for one maker from my work (250+!!!). He was prolific and his work was a combination of all things great: Wonderfully executed designs, perfectionist quality builds, as well as a solid foundation for other artists to deliver their artistry.

Joe Kious has impacted MY life through his work. So many others. I thank him.

I'm glad I spent an hour chatting and relaxing with him and Warren outside at our hotel at Solvang. Great stories. :)

My sincere thoughts and prayers out to the family and closest friends.

Jim
