Priced way over standard Chris Reeves knives. Do you guys think that the current price for $625 is worth it for a Rick Hinderer Generation 3 flipper knife.
Are they really that much better than Chris Reeves whose prices are significantly less, or is it just a supply and demand thing as it is hard to find a Rick Hinderer flipper to buy these days, and Rick is not taking any more orders inorder to keep up with his current backlog.

Your opinions are appreciated.

Well I don't know about joe, but I'd say it is and it isn't.

Let's say you snagged one for that price, but didn't like it. You could sell it for what you paid, possibly more.

Its also possible to get one for less.

So it comes down to how badly one wants it, and how much balance is left on their credit card.

well the MSRP is 385, but you have to get on a list for those, and it could take 2 years to get. or pay the 550-650 price and get it now, you have to decide to take a time loss or a financial loss to get one.

I was lucky to get one for MSRP... it is absolutely worth the >$400 price tag... would I pay over 600 for it... probably not, only because at that price there are a ton of customs I would rather have...

Rick's knives are amazing. They are wicked, wicked tough-in my opinion, it one of THE toughest custom knives out there. His fit and finish are superb. The XM-18 is very much worth every penny. The XM-18 is in a class of it's own. I love my Gen 2 3 incher. My XM-18 IS one of favorites. It is as closet to perfect as you can get.

I have never handled one, and have wanted one for a real long time. Worth it for 600+? Not a chance imo.

I think $625 is a little on the high end right now for Gen 3s. I'd certainly prefer to get it for less if I could. If I had the cash (and didn't already own one), I'd probably go as high as $575 in this market. I do like them more than the Sebenza, though that will vary from person to person. If you were to get one for $625 just to try it out, you may end up breaking even or losing up to ~$70 if you decide to sell it. If you try eBay, you might be able to get it off for more, but that's a gamble. You're taking a risk by shelling out that much for any knife without having first played with one. But they tend to sell rather fast if priced right.

Here's another way to look at it.

Let's say you spend that 625 or whatever, and it turns out better then you expected. You're going to have something that can last a lifetime. It might become your favorite user\collection piece, and you wouldn't sell it for double, triple. You may like it so much that you stop buying other knives, and end up saving money.

I paid 380 for a new umnumzaan, which has become my perfect knife. If things were different and the zaan was as hard to get as an XM18, I'd be leary for awhile about paying a high markup, but wouldn't think twice about the cost after I got it.

So maybe you'll feel a sting about the price paid, but it won't last. And if its not the knife for you, itd take all of about a half hour to sell it to someone. Might be out some cash, might not.

If you're in the right place at the right time, from a forum, or from a dealer, you can get one at or near Ricks price.

Only you can decide if paying more than the original price of $395 is worth it.

That being said, the XM-18 is, in my opinion, a better knife than CRKS.

They truly are the melding of Strider / CRK.

Strider Sng/Smf’s are very strong, especially in the pivot area, quick to deploy, and very ergonomic. They handle very well compared to straight handled folders like CRKS. But, they are not as nicely finished as CRK’s.

CRK’s are very nicely finished. However, the pivot, on the Seb, is not as strong as the aforementioned Striders, the deployment speed is much more awkward and slow on CRK’s, and they are not as ergonomic as Striders. CRK’s handle like pigs compared to the ergonomic designs of some other makers. (Strider Sng. Spyderco Para, XM-18)

The XM-18 has all of the positives of Strider/CRK and none of the negatives.

I wouldn’t pay over $500 bucks for one though unless you are sure about it.

Sorta OT, but isn't Rick coming out with a XM-24? I'm guessing it will be a larger knife, maybe a 4.0" blade?

If you are going to carry and use it, then the XM-18 is the perfect sweet spot for an edc -- even at aftermarket prices. If you want a safe queen to admire then I think there are other choices once you get up to the high end of the XM-18 prices.

I think it's a good buy for under $500. Anything over that and I'll pass.

The prices on them have been gradually coming down, it wasn't that long ago these things were selling instantly at $600-$700+. Now I rarely see one above $600. Who knows it might not be long before they start selling for closer to MSRP.
