I have been after a Matt Diskin Fire for over a year now, ever since I saw one for the first time, and learned about the craftsmanship, materials, and the amazing features that the knife brings to the table.
2 Weeks ago, I bought one from a great member here, who told me it had some minor imperfections, but it was minor stuff. I want to make it clear that he was not misleading in any of his assessments of the knife, and this is NO way a knock against him.
Anyway, upon receiving the knife, he and I both were surprised to find that what we thought were minor issues of blade centering had some more complicated origins. The frame of the knife was not entirely flush with the back spacer, causing the centering issue, which could not be remedied by simply adjusting the pivot like he and I originally thought. In addition to that, the thumb stud became loose shortly after I got the knife.
Luckily, I know Joe. For anyone who isn't familiar with him, Joe Paranee (Jparanee here), works very closely with Matt, and is present at all of his shows as a part of Diskin USA. I had met Joe here, and he and I had talked about the Fire a few times before I got this one. I called Joe and talked to him about the issues I was having. He said that they were in no way normal for Matt's work, and my experience since then has entirely supported that statement.
Joe told me to send in the knife and Matt would have it fixed for me as soon as he could. He even said I didn't have to cover return shipping, but I felt like I should at least do that much for them. To put it in perspective, Matt and Joe just got done with Blade, where Joe says they sold completely out of all of their knives, and Matt is preparing for the Gathering coming up soon too, having to make a vast number of knives for that show as well, but he still took the time to repair my knife.
Not only that, but I shipped the knife out on Friday, June 27th, it arrived at Matt's shop in Washington state on Monday, and he had it in the mail back to me this Monday, July 7th, even with Independence Day Weekend to work around. I must say, the knife now could not be any more perfect. The blade is perfectly centered, the studs feel like they're a solid part of the blade, and the knife overall is everything I would've hoped it to be and more.
I can't thank Joe and Matt enough for all of their help, and I have to agree with people when they say Matt's work is well worth the price, and then some. Anyone who hasn't had a chance to check out the new flipper model by Matt should look it up. There are some nice pictures on here of it, as well as a thread that Joe started to show it off (including his proto that has some awesome fluting in it).
I'll post up some pictures when I get a chance of the before and after, but it will probably have to wait until tomorrow, since I don't have my camera handy right now.
