All,

I'm not very knowledgeable on traditional slipjoints. What do people think of Joel Chamblin in this field? Feel free to PM me if you'd rather.

Thanks,

JD

He's right there at the top of the slipjoint makers IMHO but doesn't quite have the name recognition of others like Bose, Shadley etc. I have 2 of his knives and love them both. His secondary market prices have been rising as of late but there are still a few bargains that pop up every now and then.

Top quality fit and finish, which I know matters to you Joss.

Aftermarket prices are in keeping with this, FWIW.

Best Regards,

STeven Garsson

Some of the cleanest work I've seen lately. He had some amazing knives at the Plaza show and I was in all his lotteries but didn't win.

Top of the pyramid. There are a few others who rival his quality but no one who can top it. See for yourself.

...I got his price list last week; let me know if you want me to fax it to you. I've spoken to him on the phone a few times and he seems real nice, and his wait list isn't as long as some of the more well-known slip joint makers.

Would you mind faxing it to me also? I will PM you my toll-free fax number so it won't cost you any line charges.

Appreciate it.

All,

Thank you. Coop, I actually considered buying that Congrss - I got the pic this email from Paul. I'm going to pass because I don't really like the pattern, but I think I'm going to place an order...

Is there a good source for what the various patterns are? I have seen some here and there, but I'd love to see a comprehensive source in one place.

Cheers,

JD

Hi Joss
Joel and Sandi are beautiful people
His work is top drawer
Last several years he seems to have concentrated on the sheffield patterns
(Sheffield exhibition knives is a wonderful resource) his checkering and pique are artful and meticulous. Seems to have a nice stash of blacklip too. You will be absolutley pleased with his work.
He may not have as vocal a following as the Boses or Gene but his stuff walks and talks just as loudl!

I recently placed an order for a 5 blade Rodgers pattern w/ blacklip pearl and pique work. The wait time was much less than other top-level slipjoint makers, and the price was not bad. The delivery date, (which I emphasized had to be very solid) was met without any trouble, and I must say that the knife is as near to dead-solid-perfect as any other that I own.

Of course, in addition I must add that Joel is a very nice gentleman to deal with.

That sounds amazing. Could you post a picture? I'd love to see his pique work.

My picture taking abilities always sucked. However, I have just moved to Israel, and will probably set up a scanner soon. In addition, I will be looking up David Darom (an old friend) to share a glass of whisky or 2, and maybe I can see if he will do some serious photography.

Shaldag - even a sucky picture would be great.

I just placed 2 orders, one for a teardrop with turtleshell, the other for a warncliffe whitler with checkered & piqued black pearl. I dealt with Sandi and the communication was impeccable.
