John Andrews - If you know a generous man, John was the model from which he was taken. As many of you have found John offers his wide experience, unique brand of wisdom, subtle humor and humane warmth freely to all. Never a cross word or criticism for anyone, only support. So he fits right in around here!

Today John graced our home with his happy face. He generously allowed me to heap my modest work on him and offered only praise. He solved a sheath problem that has plagued me for over a year!

And he brought a truck load of stuff he's gathered up to give me... An etching machine, a glue machine (this one is still a mystery, but I'm on it :D ), a bunch of O1 - watch for integral boot knives coming up next year, a big grinding wheel, some stainless pipe to use for my eventual salt pot... You get the idea. John questioned me to learn my interests and needs, and set out to poll his vast network of friends to find stuff for me. And boy did he!

Just thought I'd mention again how cool this man is. He's one in a million and I'm sure happy to have met him. Thanks for coming over John, you made my day special.

Dave

Hey John, how did you get Dave's password?

Steve

;) ;) ;) ;)

I've had a few correspondences with him, I'm sure everything you said is true - I'd really like to met the man.

Isn't he the one that acra-glassed his thumb and forefinger on his left hand? Swears he can't get them apart.

Thanks, Dave! Now I can't get to work, my head is too big to fit through the doorway! And thanks for the great ivory, belts, and Cratex, big guy! I really enjoyed your fine shop tour, and meeting your family. Dave is too modest, and ol'Daves shop is really nice, and well equipped. AND CLEAN AND WARM! Dave apologized for a little dust that I didn't even see! Shucks, I dust my shop with a scoop shovel! Dave showed me some of his great knives, and even let me handle them. And then after coffee and the shop tour we went out to a local knife and gun show, where Dave delivered one of his knives (one I had slobbered all over) to a very happy customer. I bet you didn't know Dave makes his own really nice sheaths, too. Dave, tell them about those guarantees with the knife picture and info you print out and send with your knives. Really cool! Thanks for everything, Dave! I gotta climb in the old truck and get up your way more often! Steve, you rascal, that's is MY secret! Good one, fella! Actually, Dave has me confused with someone else!

I agree with all you say Dave. It has been very pleasant working with John on our collab. knife.

John, you are right, Dave is a class act all the way. I had the great pleasure of meeting him at Blade this year and we had a blast. Dave's knives are also a pleasure to look at and handle. I'll bet his customer was happy! Since I was driving up to Blade, Dave shipped his knives to me and I brought them up so he didn't have to put up with the airport "security" folk. It was no hardship at all having his knives to gawk at for a few weeks! And John, any friend of Dave's is a friend of mine, so you must be an allright guy! You were quite generous, just like Dave is. He gave me quite a bit of handle material at Blade too including some gorgeous pink ivory!

SS pipe for a salt pot too! I didn't see that at first. Dave you're trying to sneak a march on me aren't you?

How did I miss all you guys at Blade? Next time I'm bringing a knifemaker-detector to help me out...

John - this makes our missed opportunity to meet even more painful... Someday, I guess.

Thanks for the kind words, guys! I really look forward to seeing you folks one of these days, too! I guess I have a gatherer's knack for scrounging free stuff, so I might as well pass it along. By the way, I just gave a pickup load of fruitwood, walnut, and some other assorted wood to a wood carver. The wood was pretty plain stuff, no character, just in my way here. I have a lead on some more, if anyone is interested. EDITED TO ADD, I beleive it is walnut and probably cherry, don't know what else. I haven't got there to check it out yet.I will post it when I get it checked out. Free wood, guy passed away and another guy wants rid of it.

John, only knowing you from here and over the phone I know for a fact you are like a magnet. Being the SUPER great guy and friend to all and there are NO strangers has proven to us your true make up - : amongst the finest I have been lucky enough to correspond with.

You da man for sure.

Thanks, Roger! Naw, more like a dust bunny, things just stick to me. But if you could put in a kind word about me to my mother in law,........ . Naw, no use you being her enemy, too! In the old days, I would have just raided her village, burned it down, eaten her dog, then carried off her daughter. As it was, carrying off her daughter was more than enough!

Hey John, I got that mother-in-law, too. Sounds like another great maker and man. Some of you guys I've talked to on the phone, some only by e-mail, and met in person way too few. I still say the nicest people I've ever met in my life were knifemakers. I hope to put faces to names next year. Tess, Danny and I will have a table at Blade next year. Can't wait and I hope to have something worthy to show by then (aside from Danny Boy).
:D
