Over the past 15 years or so, I have been interested in the Burroughs story John Carter of Mars, so to see the new trailer for the story was great. Even better, they seem to have some pretty interesting blades used in the movie. I found this picture from the movie of Deja Thoris holding a blade that would be amazing to have in a strong steel such as SR101 or INFI. I especially was interested in the Handle and the etching on the blade. If Busse or Swamp Rat were to put out a blade fashioned after this, I think it would sell. What I like about it is the full tang handle with the wood insert (G10 or Micarta would be great). I think the length on a sword of this fashion would be good at around 28-32 inches total, sorta in the fashion of the Waki.

So, I was looking at some swords created in the fashion of those illustrated by Frank Frazetta for the John Carter "Mars" series, by a sword maker named Jody Samson (Frazetta Martian Long Sword). This was around 2003, if I am not mistaken. Apparently it was made of 1095 carbon steel and supposedly functional. The price was pretty hefty at $1665.

I've been able to handle one of the Samson pieces, and while "functional" I would say it is still more of an art piece, and an amazing one that that. The pictures don't really do it justice, Jody was an amazing talent with the grinder.
