richardj sent me a box of his special John Deere and cornfield hardened steel.I found a nice slice of 1/8" and made this knife. Its the second one ive done with this steel and i really like it.First pic is a stump of Bodark (sp?) that has been sitting around my shop for a couple of years. Its very very hard.It didnt seem to affect the edge at all.Scales are Buckeye Burl and natural micarta pins.OAL is 10" 5 3/8" to the scale. He asked me to try a hollow grind and thats what i did. Thanks Richard!

that turned out really nice don. i'm curious to know how a hollow ground blade holds up. did you leave the edge a little thicker this time before heat treat?

That's a fine piece of work  Really like the handle and the file work.

its some good stuff jonny. my buddy that farms just outside of town said he has seen the disks go through frozen ground, get bent 90 degrees and then straighten back out and keep going. working it as is can eat up some belts quick but it makes one hell of a knife when its heat treated right.

don, make a chopper next from a big piece about the size of k II and see if you can get the same results i get. its 13" overall with an 8" cutting edge and almost 2" wide with a chisel grind. i'll send you the specs on the blade grind profile in an email.
