Awhile ago Bill Burke got me interested in using John Deere load shafts for my 5160 source. BTW - thanks, Bill!

Anyway, I have since developed a good relationship with two local J.D. dealers and their mechanics have kept me well supplied with shafts. Donuts, by the way, are good trade material[:D]. The steel is very high quality and consistent. During my last visit one of the mechanics gave me a very large shaft, about 3 feet long and 2" in diameter. He said it was a feed roller shaft, but he did not know if it was 5160 or not. It looks very similar, however I hesitate to waste any time on it if it is a steel of a different type. Can anyone tell me if this part is indeed 5160? Thanks.

Fox,

You are welcome. I belive that the feed roller shaft is going to be one of the 40 series of steels either 41xx or 43xx I would just set it aside and stick with the load shafts. You could forge out a piece and quench and see if it gets hard.
