Somebody in my newspaper summed it up pretty well right after he died: If you were a teen in the '80s, you got it; if you weren't, you didn't.

I was long past being a teen in the '80s, but appreciate what he did for all you "Gen Xers" out there.

Everybody seems to think of him as the Breakfast Club guy, but he also wrote such gems as:

European Vacation
Uncle Buck
The Great Outdoors
Planes, Trains & Automobiles
Mr. Mom
