Hi,
What can you tell me about John Juranitch, The Razor Edge book of Sharpening guy.
I got the book, then the guide and stones. I think its a great sharpening system.
I was just wondering, does he post anything on this forum?
How old is the guy now? Does he have any other books out?

The book I have is copy right 1985. In the back it reads "watch for our next book. This is just the first in a series".

Just looking for more info on the guy.

Thanks
JP

the family is still doing the sharpening thing......great book....I bought it when I first started making knives over 19 years ago and it was extremely educational. I read it a few times and I think it helped a lot............. ;)

It is a great book, but I do not think there were more. Razor Edge sharpeners are about as good they get, in my opinion.

I do not know how old John is, but he would probably be in his seventies.

I read ion a knife magazine that he was applying his wizardry to the art of sharpening needles. If his past success is any indicator, the next trip to the doc to get a needle may be less painful :)

Yes, he is sharp even if I don't agree 100% with his approach. He is clearly one of the most famous hand sharpening guys around and his book is an essential to every knife library even if it isn;t the very best one available. Heck, the FAQ is probably better.
The complete guide to sharpening by Leonard Lee is excellent and you want to get "Sharpening With Waterstones : A Perfect Edge in 60 Seconds (Cambium Handbook)" by Ian J. Kirby.

fracmeister: hi, thanks for the info on the other two books. I'm going to check them out.
What would you say is the best book on sharpening knives?

Thanks,
JP

I also recommend Lee's book. This guy is the guy behind Lee Valley tools. He isn't just a businessman. He started Lee Valley because he LIKES using tools. He researches tools a lot too.

In Lee's book, he has electron microscope pictures of edges and sharpening stones. Lee took this stuff to the Unviersity of Toronto (I think) to have the pics done. He SHOWS what is going on at the microscopic level. Pretty cool. His actual section on knife sharpening is small, but it is a great sharpening book in general. Lee's book and Juranich's book together are a great combo.

Just got Leonard Lee's book. Wow!

Not much on knives, but when he says "Complete Guide", he means it!

The photos of edges and stones are worth the price of the book.

The Razor Edge Book of Sharpening is IMHO, one of the best overall books out there in terms of edge sharpening/theory. It belongs in everyone's library.
