David Cornwell AKA John le Carré died in London on Saturday, December 12, age 89; cause of death, pneumonia. With some formidable competition (Balzac, Conrad, Graham Greene), he was preeminent among novelists who have written about spies and espionage, having the advantage of being himself a spy. His cover was blown by a London tabloid after his third novel was published, and he took that as an opportunity to retire from M16, the UK equivalent of the CIA.

Ten of his books were adapted for film or television. The Spy Who Came in from the Cold (1963) was the occasion of his retirement, and its 1965 film adaption was worthy of the novel. Surely everyone has seen it?

HUGE fan of his work. Read his books as a kid; watched the movies since then. Yes, I've seen that one . . . prime Richard Burton! Did not love the ending; wasn't supposed to.

If you haven't seen it, the 2011 film of "Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy" featuring an incredible cast of Gary Oldman, John Hurt, Mark Strong, Benedict Cumberbund ( :p ), Colin Firth, Tom Hardy, Toby Jones, and so many others is also excellent.

RIP.
