Hey guys, I have a John Primble colonel stockman. It is missing one of the shields on the handle. The small round shield that says Pimble is still in place, but there is a place in the handle where a large odd shaped shield used to be. I have searched the Internet and couldn't find anything. If anyone could point me in the right direction I would appreciate it. I'm also wondering how old this knife is. It has delrin handles thst put me in mind of Uncle Henry knives. The tang stamp on the major blade says John Primble Belknap Inc on the front and is marked 0001 on the back with a star under it. I would post a pic but I'm not sure how.

John Primble Belknap Hdw. & Mfg. Co. was a stamp used in later years from about 1940 to 1968.

In 1968 the stamp was shortened to Belknap Inc. Collectors can date this by a Louisville Courier-Journal newspaper article published in July of 1968. It stated, “Louisville’s Belknap Hardware and Manufacturing Co. is no more. The company hasn’t gone out of business, but its stockholders yesterday approved the change of the company name to Belknap Inc.” The reason given for the change was that U.S. Fair Packaging & Labeling Act had disallowed abbreviations of firm names, and Belknap’s whole name was simply too long to put on small items.

The star stamp on the back of the tang indicates made by Boker, probably a late 1970's product. ;)

Not much help on the missing shield, I am afraid. :o

Thanks for the info, hopefully a shield will turn up. Are John Primbles good knives. I plan to use this one as a carry knife. I don't think this on has seen much use, the springs are really stiff and the blades look almost new.

Most any John Primble knife made before the mid 1980's, when Belknap Hardware closed it's doors, are good knives, many are great knives. After the company closed, the name was bought by Bluegrass Cutlery and those knives can be hit or miss, many being made overseas.

Belknap Hardware used the name "John Primble" for it's contracted knives and placed orders with the major players in the cutlery industry. New York Knife Co., Schrade Cut. Co, Boker, are just a few of the fine cutlery companies that made the knives for Belknap Hardware & MFG. Co.

I like to think that Belknap management had a mind set similar to Waynorth, one of our outstanding members here, who special orders fine knives from top name players in the cutlery industry today. ;)

The John Primble India Steel Works stamped knives are the most desirable, however, the knives with Belknap HDW. & MFG. CO. on the tang are also great and I collect those two stamps exclusively. ;):)

This cabinet holds some of my John Primble collection :

That is a very nice collection you have there. I wish they still made knives like that.
