I had been looking at these for a couple of weeks. This morning I said, "cutter, you only live once, so go for it!" and that is just what I did.:D I had a JWS before and had to sell it a couple years ago during the "Divorce" but now that things have straightened out for the past 1.5 years, I thought it time to treat myself with a second custom folder.

My first is a Mike Irie Model 11 spearpoint, and now my second one is a John W Smith Extreme SD-3 in black micarta. I don't know for sure, but I think this may be the biggest folder John has made. It has an overall length of 10.25", with a blade of 4.5". The write up says it is constructed of a heavy duty build of titanium liners and bolsters. I am anticipating an awesome knife! The other one I had was built like a Swiss timepiece, and as solid as a tank, so I expect this one will follow suit.

As I said, I had been looking at these over the past couple of weeks. The website had 5 of these and as I watched they slowly begain to dissappear, and today there were only 2 left, the black micarta and one in ironwood.

I've read as much as I could find on John W. Smith and have found that many, many people consider him to be one of the finest builders around today. :D:thumbup: From the knives I've seen, and from the one example I've had, I have to agree!:)

Cannot copy pics from Knifearts site so I'll have to do some once the knife arrives. Btw, I wanted to make sure this knife got here so it is coming FedEx Next Day!:D

great choice man!:thumbup::cool:
I prefer the SD2 because of its size, but what a great design. Very clean. The man makes a hell of a good quality knife, and in my experience, his after sales service is phenomenally good.

Had he not made the SD-3, then an SD-2 was what I would have gone for. Although I really like the F5 he makes!:thumbup::)

I received the SD-3 yesterday. WOW!!! is about the only word I could use to describe it out of the pouch. For such a big knife it is slim, yet built like a brick sh*thouse, SOLID!!:thumbup:It has ~.080" ti liners, with the blade being .157" thick and made of S30V. Weight shows as 6.6 ounces on my scales, and it feels both weighty, and, again, solid in my hand. The fit/finish is perfect, lockup is solid with the entire lock face being covered by the blade tang and both being level on the left side, giving plenty of room for any wear. Blade is scary sharp. The opening action is silky smooth.

I guess from all my positive adjectives, you can tell I like this knife, and that would be a mistake, because I LOVE this knife!:D

I did have to one thing with this knife. I took the original pocket clip and using my microtorch, turned it into a very nice fold-over clip that allows the entire knife to go into my pocket. I usually go inside one and bend to locking linet to get stiffer lockup, and polish the liners and blade at the pivot area to smooth things up. When I opened up this one, it had all been done, and no way could I improve on it! Just wiped the old oil, applied miltech, put it back together, and into my pocket. Btw, the frame is put together using 5 screws, which tells me that it was built to use and to stay together.

Just one helluva' knife!!:thumbup::thumbup::)

here are some really crappy pics from my Blackberry. That is a quarter at the bottom to give some reference to size.
