I haven't posted anything in a while, so just so you'll know I'm still around here's one I did for John White MS a few days ago. It will be displayed at Blade at John's table.

It's the usual for me, Tannery dyed Black Wickett and Craig split to 7/8 and fully lined with the same split 2/3 and a little horn back Croc from The Ostrich Market in Florida.

I hope you enjoy, because I had fun making it.

Wow - is that a green dye at the bottom - or what am I seeing. I LOVE how it marries with the handle scales. Another top notch sheath Paul.

I saw this one in the thread about the Knife.. Dang! that's some nice work Paul.

So when you get the leather split do you ask to keep the backing to reattach or do you split it on your own? Also, do you glue down the "pinking" or "petals"?

I have my own 6" hand crank splitter, and I split a single 7/8 block cut front panel and then put the inlay in the top grain half and cement it all back together to the original 7/8 thickness and then put in the lining.

I use rubber cement on all the inlay phase up to cementing the two split halves back together. Rubber cement comes off fairly easily with a med. bristle brush if you get it on the face of the inlay material. I put a fairly heavy application of the rubber cement on the BACK side of the pinked "petals" and then as you can see in the examples the window is stitched fairly close. Then to make sure they are trained to stay down I set about a 10 pound bag of shot on them for a couple of hours. Once the TanKote, and NeatLac goes on during the final finish they are pretty well flat and permanent.

Great info. I should compile all the advice you given me and make a master works manual or something.

What brand of splitter do you use?

Landis Brand. They are a little on the pricey side IF you can even find one for sale, but I use mine several times daily so it's been a great investment. Absolutely useless if you want a spit over about 5 1/2" wide, but most sheaths fit into that window nicely, especially blade sheaths. If I have a wider need i go to the 2/3 oz. leather split at W&C and make the front panel out of that and then just glue up to an 7/8 oz. back. Makes a little heavier sheath, but there are tricks for that too.

Thanks. I got mine pre-split but forgot to ask for the backing. Yeah it does make for a thicker piece but a combination of skiving and I put it on the belt sander to thin it down if needed.
