Alright, I've been trying to track down this scene for a long time, help me out if you know it...

In which John Woo film does Chow Yun-Fat's character make a makeshift Buddhist shrine by sticking a lit cigarette in an orange because he was being chased and didn't have time to properly mourn his friend's death?

Sounds like the plot of "Hard Boiled", 1992.

Great movie! One of his best. But that isn't it... :( (I just confirmed this by scanning through it for the third time in the last 24 hours)...

The scene in question wasn't a major plot device, rather a quickly passing shot...

I seem to recall Chow Yun Fat played a criminal in this one and the scene might have taken place in a construction sight/building under renovation. They were fleeing some crime, his friend/partner had just been killed, and he quickly stops, sticks the lit cigarette in the orange (like incense), sets it down, bows, and continues fleeing...

It has been suggested to me that it might not be a John Woo film that this scene is from.

Possibly Ringo Lam's "Prison on Fire", I am downloading this now but it will take a while...

Still hoping for an absolute answer.

Certainly does sound like it's from Prison on Fire, but for some odd reason, The Replacement Killers comes to mind.

I've seen "Prison on Fire" but I don't remember it well enough.

I know for certain though that it isn't:

Hard Boiled
A Better Tomorrow
A Better Tomorrow 2
Once a Thief
The Killer
The Replacement Killers
Full Contact

And I'm pretty sure that it wasn't "City on Fire" but I can't say for sure.

I believe you are correct. I have quick scanned through most of these several times each in the past 24 hours (I've even checked different cuts of some of them).

I didn't mention what films I thought the scene wasn't in only because it is possible that I missed it while scanning through them and i didn't want to discourage any suggestions.

But I thank you for the help just the same.

Please keep the ideas coming. While I have spent the last day actively hunting this down, it is something that I have been trying to remember for over a year know, in fact, I mentioned this very scene right here on Bladeforums quite some time ago...

Thanks.

Could it be this (or does he make many cigs in oranges movies? :D)

Thank you. It's a good catch, and certainly what I was looking for, but I do feel that he might have done it again in a different movie...

(this shot is also from Prison on Fire)
