So I'm a youngin that is getting interested in Johnny Cash. There are probably songs of his that I have heard but don't know but what got me was his song "Hurt" being used in "The Shield" Commercial and it really got to me. Planning on picking up "American IV: The Man Comes Around" 2m. I was wondering what other cds are a must have or which box collections is good. Feel free to share which cd of his was your favorite too.

All four of the American Recordings albums are awsome, but for his older hits, save yourself some money and get the 2 CD set "The Essential Johnny Cash", covers all his best songs from the 50's through the late 90's, 36 songs. Wal-Mart has it on sale tight now for 15.00.

For compilations I would suggest Love, God, Murder (3 disc set, my favorite disc was Murder, and you can sometimes find it sold seperately), or the new The Legend if Johnny Cash compilation that just came out. There is also a Legend 12 disc box set, but that is a bit pricy. All of the American Recordings were great and should be given a listen at the very least. My favorite of the later albums is Unchained (incidently, the backing band on that album is Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers, not bad for back up eh?).

The American albums are great.
But for the older stuff, nothing can beat the raw energy of these live albums: At Folsom Prison ('68) and At San Quentin ('69)!

When I saw this thread on the Comminity Centre main board, I thought this is going to be an amusing thread. Did anyone notice it says 'Johnny Cash picks a Deadly Fart'. I thought there would be mention of him falling into a burning ring of fire or something. I would like to see the film having seen previews of it.

That would also be my suggestion. I have a CD that has BOTH of these on it.

I have American IV, and San Quentin. Both are very good cds. I personally liked Trent Reznors original take on his song Hurt, mainly because Johnny's rendition is so haunting and a little scary to play. I'm going to get the Essential Johnny Cash, it is a large cd set, not a box set though. There is a "Legend" CD that I've heard about, which supposedly has all of his songs. That's a lot to dive into, but if you're a big fan...

"The Legend of Johnny Cash" is re-digitalized (or whatever) and has old classics and his later in life stuff too. An excellent one dics compilation. However, "At Folsom Prison" and other originals aren't to be missed for their concept and themes. Another good one you can find in the bargain bin sometimes is his "16 greatest hits" I like this because it has "Ghostriders in the sky" on it. Hope you enjoy. JC was a bad-ass mofo who went his own way, did his own thing no matter what anyone thought and sang about killing people more than any three rappers. A true American icon.
