I'm not a big fan of the The Smiths...but geez......Johnny Marr can play. The short solo at the end of Stop Me If You've Heard This One Before just kills me. There is nothing special or even difficult about it but there is just something about the way he plays it. He such a solid and unpretentious guitarist. Anyone else like him?

His sound reminds me of Andy Summers from The Police.

+1 Here.

I've always like the smiths, mostly because of the guitar playing. I've heard he is currently a member of Modest Mouse, a band out of Issaquah, WA. I don't quite understand why he would join a small time band in WA, as opposed to doing some solo stuff, or maybe even something with Morrisey.

"maybe even something with Morrisey." because they don't particularly get along. read "the songs that saved your life" if you want some insight into the relationships and what happened in the break up and aftermath. marr already is a guitar legend in most circles, he will be remembered as being one of the all time greats some day.

Johnny Marr has always prided himself on being an anti-guitar hero, eschewing the big "rock-star" style of guitar solos. Very original and creative, he is one of the more underrated players of the last 25 years.

I can't think of anyone specifically that he reminds me of but I think he (and others) have proven that you don't have to be a guitar-virtuoso to be an effective contributor.

His early playing with the Smiths was really communicative imo. Don't forget he wrote all the tunes too.
