Had fun shooting this one for fellow knife nut, Ryan Hays. We're both perfectionists so it was like two porcupines dancing. Neither one of us could be satisfied until we finally got the image below.

It's a single blade mammoth ivory slip-joint Trapper engraved by Jim Small. When Ryan first spotted this folder on Johnny's show table it had not been engraved. Although the knife itself is first class, Ryan was especially attracted to the mammoth ivory's ultra-rich warmth. Hard to describe and even harder to photograph, the primo ivory impresses like a $12 cappuccino. The engraving came later and Jim Small did a terrific job of it, including the gold accents which tap right into the beautiful tones in the ivory.

I met Johnny Stout in Little Rock. He is an outstanding maker of sljoints and a great guy also. This is a beautiful example of his work. The engraving is like the icing on the cake.

That is a beautiful slipjoint! The mammoth is great, and the engraving is very nice without being overpowering.

Kind regards,

Jos

Wonderful. I am especially fond of Jim Small's work in any capacity, and he sure proved me right on this one.

Buddy, I'm aware that sometimes even makers and collectors have a defining eye, and it's up to US to meet that focus. In the end, it's always worth the dance.

Props to Johnny Stout (who can humble us with his own photography, as well as his builds).

Nice folder with great ivory.

Jim's engraving is like icing on the cake. I have a couple of pieces with Jim's work. Always adding and never taking away from the knife.

Great package.

I've always found Johnny's knives to be very well done and this one is certainly no exception.:thumbup::thumbup:
