Today I told my family that I am going to join the Australian Army. As an immigrant I fill that this country has done so much for me and I will do something in return. The 9-11-01 has definitely helped my dissension but it is something I was thinking of for long time. Any way after all the "are you sure you want to be a soldier " tacks from my family thay asked my what sort of going away present I want I told them that I want a knife. I always wanted a big folder but a survival knife would also come useful so can some people who are more familiar with the art of soldiering recommend a good knife for the appropriate tasks that I might find myself doing in about 3 months.

I was an Soldier for six years and I would recommend a multi-tool like the Leatherman supertool. It will prove itself 1000X more useful than any large fixed blade IMHO.

Good luck Soldier,
Allen.

I'd choose a 6-8 inch blade. Remember you'll be crawling, rolling, swimming, going for nice long strolls. :D Really a 8 inch blade will just about do anything a 13 inch will, just takes a little longer.

Check out what I make at http://www.ICCKnives.com My military discount does go to military of "friendly countries" to the US.

Are you planing to go SAS?

You won't need a knife until after basic training, so leave it home till you get to your duty station. I would think it's the same as the US Army.

AllenC is on the right track. Any solder soon discovers that UTILITY
is the main requirement for any cutting tool. I spent 18 months in S.E.
Asia in the 60's and found my military issue four blade camp knife to
be way more useful than any fixed blade could have been. Remember
that as a rule the actual fighting will be done with a gun. Close quarters
hand to hand is not often the case. So ask for a really good camp knife
or SAK or better still get a Leatherman Supertool. I just wish the Super
Tool had been around when I was in Asia. Stay Safe and pay attention in
basic training ,it could save you life.

SERE 2000
Spyderco Military
Spyderco Wegner
Benchmade 710

Those would be my top choices for folders.

Fixed blade - Strider (perhaps a BT, WB or MT)

Folder - Sebanza

Always carry a multi-tool (Leatherman Wave?)

Good luck,

S.

I'm in the U.S. army right now and I have to agree that a Leatherman Wave or a Gerber Multi-plier would be your most useful item. I can't count how many times someone has said "Hey anybody got a gerber" referring to the Multitool. these are the only two I have owned but i hear the SOG one is good too. if you're gonna stay in the field, then get a bigger fixed blade when you get to your unit. by then you'll probably want to have a folder, multitool, and a big fixed blade. the most useful will without a doubt will be the Multi tool. when you get to your unit and go to the field just check out what some of the more high speed guys are carrying and ask them questions. they will be happy to help out a new guy as long as you're not a screw up.

I can think of 3 (4) good choices:

Leatherman Wave
REKAT Carnivour (or Sifu)
Cold Steel SRK

I have posted several times that if I were to reenlist today, I would want my:
Benchmade 710HS
Leatherman Wave
Busse Basic 5
Those choices might be different depending on MOS.

I was never a soldier, but I believe that unless you intend to join Australian special forces or be a ranger, a basic utility pattern like an SAK, Boyscout knife, or Leatherman style multi-tool will be far more useful than a large single blade folder or large fixed blade. I don't know what the military culture is like in Australia, but in America, many soldiers find themselves unable to carry large knives when they are on the post anyway. The utility patterns have the advantage of being P.C. and more practical.

Well first to answer Junglejim308's question yes I want to join the SAS!!!

Hay glockman99 I love the look of Sifu but from searching in the REKAT's forum it seems that this knife has locking problems but I never handled one so how reliable are thay.

Anthony Australian army can carry any knife that is appropriate and as many operations are in jungle environment so a chopping blade can com in useful

I actually own Leatherman Wave so that covers multitools. I use to be a survival instructor in the Air Force Cadets so self relance is very important to me.

I WISH I had a Leatherman Wave when I was in the USMC. You've got the most useful item already covered. Good for you!
As far as big knives go, Rotsa Ruck GI!
You've gotta thousand great ones to choose from.
I wish I had a Busse Basic 7 when I was serving too along with that Leatherman Wave. So I guess that would be my advice for a large fixed blade.

May God's protection go with you soldier!

Hey Survivor, another Marine here:D ,I would say with the multi-tool you have the folder covered for now,get your self a good fixed blade,My vote goes to Strider, becose you will mostly, use it as a tool(digging, prying, ect.)but if need be,it is more then serviceable as a weapon. That said, have you ever thought about a tomahawk?,also a very versitile tool, and a very effective weapon, check out some of ATC's offerings, they have a forum here.I would wish you luck, but that is'ent what you need. All it takes is gut's and determination, what ever they throw at you, don't give up and you'll do just fine.take it easy bro,
Dean
