I recently got this Joker Bowie, and it is a really fine knife, with what I consider a really great Bowie shape. Big, sharp, slightly blade heavy with balance point about an inch forward of the guard. Yet the swege is unsharpened, which would work great for general chores or in camp, yet not as good for defense. So should I have the swege sharpened?

Swedge can be made wide angle and dull edged , or as sharp as you want with narrower angle .

Dull swedge can still hurt in a fight , but sharp is better .

There are utility uses for both , but a sharp edge limits baton or hand pressure on that area .

Make sure of legality , in your area, that your mod wouldn't be considered a DE .

I like a sharpened swedge, I actually find it useful, and I think WAY too much importance is placed on batoning... use and ax, and pick smaller pieces.

That being said I wouldn't - you'll ruin resale value

Nope , don’t sharpen the edge. Not that you plan to baton, but a sharpened swedge would dig into the baton you are using, and you may grab the the very front for up close work….would do a number on your fingers if sharpened.

Whatever floats your boat. It’s a giant fancy Bowie knife with a huge guard, it’s not for slicing onions so a double edge wouldn’t be do a problem I’d imagine. lol Lots of fighting have sharp swedges, I say go for it! 🙂
