I will be posting several images as well as background on Josef.

This one is called "Life".

Holy scmoley. The pictures and the knives are stunning. I look forward to some more info.

These are very cool looking knives. It would be fun to have one of these. Very nice!

Too bad the ivory on the "Silver Stone" isn't nice. :) NOT!!! :)

The Gabe Newell Collection, has a nice ring to it, though I greatly prefer the "Ari Fisher Collection", it just rolls off the tounge... :)

Gabe, did you buy these directly from the maker? ANy hint as to prices/wait time?

I can't wait for Gabe to give us a long narrative on Josef and these pieces and his inspirations. They certainly deserve the acclaim!

That fixed blade is so delicate and engaging. The knife fits in that form-fitted sterling silver sheath perfectly. Spider on one side, fly on the other--soon to be consumed. That's... 'life'.

The others are clever and so artistic. Wow!

(That's not all. there are more...!)

That first one, Life, has got to be one of the most beautiful knives I've ever laid my eyes upon. I can't stop looking at it...

They are jewelry with an edge. There is a total difference.

The maker is showing significantly more attention to the ART of the knife, than the CRAFT of the knife.

I have no problem with this, but these are ART knives, and I don't collect those, nor have I ever had much use for them, pretty much the same as miniatures in my book, lovely to look at, but with very limited utility.

The ART of the knife, and the CRAFT of the jewelry is top, top notch, though, and this maker deserves to get whatever price he is charging.

Best Regards, and Happy New Year,

Steven Garsson

P.S.-Don't start flaming on me, IT is just MY opinion, and I am entitled to express it.

OK, I won't start the flames. :)

Without flaming, I'd have to diasgree with your take, saying they are more like jewelry than knives, not really, the major reason being, they are less like jewelry than knives, and more like knives than jewelry, because, jewelry is designed to be worn on the body as useless ornaments, these knives are not, jewelry, excepting watches, tends to not be meant for, nor capable of utility and/or cutting tasks, these knives, though they do it in style, can cut and hold their own as a knife, Damasteel, which they all seem to be, is a fairly usable type of damascus steel, yes, they are more geared towards art than utility, but, that doesn't make them akin to jewelry, just a knife that doubles as an expression of artistic vision and ability.

Are they art knives, yes, but, I would say that there are a lot of art knives that can also be used, if you are inclined to do so, in fact, most of them can, if you don't mind screwing up your fancy, expensive knives. I like all knives, art, utility, tactical.

It's kind of like a Rolex Submariner, the classic stainless version is a very capable utility/dive watch, then, if you want, you can buy the more expensive gold and stainless version, more money, slightly less capable because the gold links aren't nearly as strong as the steel ones, however, it is still a divers watch, just a fancier one that sacrifices a small measure of utility for aesthetics. The knife world, and as is confirmed by countless collectors who buy fancy art type knives, is big enough for both types, don't you think? :)

These are stunning works of art, and for the most part I like the designs. Not being a fan of daggers the second knife doesn't appeal to me as much as the other two. All of these knives would be nice even if they were quite plain.

Unbelievable. If I can't be Gabe Newell, it's nice that I can at least see some of his cool collection.

I know art knives are impractical, but I love them anyway. It's one of my favorite parts of going to knife shows. I get to see knives I'd never use if I owned them, but will probably never get the chance to make that decision.

Gabe, thanks for sharing, (and thanks for HL2:)).

Maybe more like a Dunhill or Cartier cigarette lighter.

A watch, you wear, and expect to get scratched, and dinged, just like your body.

I had a $600 Dunhill Art Deco lighter once, made of silver and black enamel. I could not stand to use the thing because it was so pretty, and the thought of scratches on it, or chips, which would be irreparable, made me nuts, so I sold it, no regrets, but it was still a thing of beauty.

I get your point, but my point is basically that these knives look to be ergonomically and practically unusable. Look at the sheath on the first knife. Would you want to get a scratch on it, or drop it? It would drive me to distraction :D .

Happy New Year,

Steven Garsson

Those are some of the most incredible works I have seen yet. I love them.

Being a long time fantasy reader/watcher/fan, I can appreciate these knives even though they are not 'practical'. Practical has its place, but so do art knives.
