I am pretty excited to show my first dog bone bowie. All of the fittings are sterling silver. The handle is fossil mammoth. I am going to build a silver sheath for it soon. Let me know what you think.

It´s gorgeous apart from the hideous spanish notch (don´t pay attention to me, I just hate them :D).

I think it is a great idea to have it engraved! The knife certainly deserves that.

Congratulations.

Josh,
That's a great looking dogbone. It will be great with a silver sheath.

WOOF!!!!:D Having it engraved is a darn good idea, but there is a problem. How can you engrave the knife without having some "scratchin" done on the metal sheath? That would be incredible but pricey:eek:

I would definitely have the sheath engraved too. The price would be up there a bit but I think it may be worth a shot. The only problem is that it will be a bit more difficult to engrave since it's already assembled.

Beautiful piece Josh - gorgeous damascus, stunning ivory and I love the silver fittings.

If it were my piece I would forego the engraving - just personal preference - I like it the way it is and feel that more would just be more. Between the bold damscus, the coloured and textured ivory, the multiple domed pins, the escutcheon and the silver whatchamcallit surrounding the handle, there is plenty happening already. It all works - and REALLY well - but I'm not seeing this piece needing anything more.

generally not a big fan of 'geometric' handles, especially the dog bone variety, but there is a lot of stuff going on here that keeps my eye roving. Not sure about the rectangular escutcheon, but the proportions of that handle are so happening. A dog bone shaped escutcheon on a dog bone handle would be a funny thing, not that I'm suggesting it's a good idea, but...:)

I think engraving would really complement the piece, particularly with that damascus blade and the fittings which look a little too bright in relation to it.

It's a fantastic piece, I really think it's great!

That is one incredible knife! Steve's engraving would make it WOW, I think that is a great idea. The silver sheath and knife would give goose bumps mto behold!:thumbup:

Josh, amazing piece and yes it "needs" some world class engraving. This knife even makes me rethink our upcoming project:thumbup::D:cool:

Josh, the first thing that came to mind upon seeing this beautiful piece was the wide collar and how the knife could benefit from some fine subtle engraving. It will have to be a suitable pattern though as not to conflict with the other design elements.

A accompanying silver sheath with complementing engraving will no doubt take this piece over the top.

I agree with Roger. For me it would be a case of leaving well enough alone. And this knife is already for me a LOT nicer than just "well enough."

Josh this is one of those knives that the more I look at it the more I like it.
I'd go so far as to suggest to the new owner that he or she enjoy the knife for a few weeks before making the decision to add some "scratching" to it.

I keep looking at the knife and thinking that it looks great the way it is, but if it were engraved I just might like it better. I wouldn't know for sure until I saw it. One thing for sure, engraving would take away from it.

Thanks for the nice comments guys. From the reaction here I think I will leave it up to the future owner to decide if he wants engraving or not.
