Journeyman jimping

I received my new journeyman in the mail today. Perfect centering, great lockup. But the jimping on the thumb ramp appears to be mangled. There are hardly any horizontal lines at all. Just a number of what I would call tooling marks.

Can other journeyman owners tell me if this is by design or if I just got a bad blade? I was expecting the clean grooves of my commander. This is a far cry from that! Pics to follow shortly...

Sorry....first time trying to post pics.

I called EKI and was told that this appearance is the design and normal, even after sharing one of the images above (I hope you all can get to those, BTW - please let me know if you can't). I contacted the dealer and he seems to indicate strongly that this is not the case and has offered to swap the knife for me. I'll mail it off to him tomorrow and will be very interested in seeing what the second Journeyman like...

It's been an interesting, ahem, journey.

It does not look great but with that texture it probably functions better (grippier) than if it was polished smooth. ;)

Your point is well taken. I've never owned a safe-queen and don't mean to emphasize form over function. It just looks a bit unfinished to me so I wanted to see what others know. One of the best thing about quality brands is the support and knowledge-sharing that comes from you all.

If the lockup/action/centering are as you say, I'd live (happily) with it. My Journeyman is easily the best lockup/action of my EKI's, but it's jimping is, well, not pretty.

I guess I never really paid attention to my jimping until just now. My Journeyman is from 2011 and its jimping looks like the jimping on my 2012 Super Commander -- and they look like yours.

I have a 2012 cqc-7a and its jimping is much smoother as it resembles Officer's Match cqc-10's.

Hmm. I honestly never really noticed the aesthetic. And I've not noticed a difference in performance either. Anyway, I'm glad you are able to get a different one. I know you will REALLY like your Journeyman!

In an interesting turn of events, the dealer contacted me yesterday evening and told me that he had opened several Journeyman's (Journeymen??) and some Commanders and all of his 2013 stock has this appearance. While willing to swap, I wouldn't have noticed a difference. I appreciate him taking the time to look into it for me.

So this is the new norm, it appears, and I'll leave it to the fit and finish thread for further discussion or comment. The resolution for me is knowing that nothing is amiss - it appears as intended - so I threw it on the ultra-fine rods for the tiniest of touch-ups, dropped it in my pocket, and plan to enjoy the heck out of it. So far, I'm enjoying the blade shape for EDC tasks.

In addition to my (top down) CQC-10 (2009) and Journeyman (2011), here's the jimping on my Commander (2004) and Super Commander (2013).
