Hey Fellas-

I've been playing with posting images, so thought I'd throw this one up here.

This is the knife I forged out for my JS performance test. I did the test back on July 4th!!! Yea, I'm slow :)

Standard ABS test knife dimensions: 10" blade of 52100
416 and copper guard
5" cocobolo handle

You can see the amount of set the blade took in the second shot. I was pretty proud of how close it came back to straight.

Out of curiosity I weighed it on my food scale, and it weighs 10 oz. :)

Thanks for look'n :D

Nice knife, you planning on submitting that one to be jurried also? :p Where's the duct tape?

Mighty fancy for a test knife.... it'll look good in a wall display with the certificate, though.

Marvelous return-to-true, Nick. Seldom do we get to see 'em work like that. Big kudos! :)

Nick, now why did you have to go and do that, you're supposed to make an ugly knife for the test piece. Mine is so ugly I'm afraid to show it :)
Nicely done man. I'll see ya in Hot-lanta.

Looks too damm good for a test knife. Ive never seen one spring back that far, is it mostly spring tempered with a hard edge?

Thanks Fellas :)

I know, I was supposed to make it with cardboard and duct-tape! :p

I'm a freak.

Bruce, I fully quenched it tip down in quench oil. Then did a freeze in liquid nitrogen and it Rc'd 63.5 at the ricasso.

Tempered it back to 60Rc.

Then used "tempering tongs" on the spine with the edge in water. You can't get a real accurate Rc on a surface that's not flat, but I think the spine is around 55.

It was hard as hell to get it to bend in the first place.

I made this down at Mike Vagnino's last summer... his came back even a little more than this one did.

Thanks again guys!

Don, looking forward to meeting you at Blade! :D

Wow that's really impressive, both the knife itself and how close to true it came back!

Can't wait to see your knives first hand at Blade.

Damm Nick. Thats impressive. Nice looking piece too. Shame to bend something that good looking. Can't believe you got that kind of bend and spring back from a full quench. Way to go!!

Nick,

That does it------I gotta get me a Nick Wheeler knife!

That's one AWSOME looking knife!

Mike

Impressive indeed! Well done, and it's nice to see something other than a full tange being bent because everybody "knows" a hidden tange is "weak" :p

Nick had anyone asked me to predict what your test knife would look like, it'd be very much like that. You are indeed a freak - my kind of freak! :D I too think that'd look good in display, that kind of workmanship and performance deserves it. It'd be a fine thing to put on the wall over your shop desk or whatever you use for that purpose. Alternatively, you could put it over my shop desk... :D Very fine work Nick, thanks for sharing. It's good to have you posting more often again.

Nick very nice. Good on ya for heat treating the knife the way you did.

I hate seeing those test knifes with the 80 d. bend. It just shows the applicant didn't put to much in the way of heat treat on the test knife.
